What am I missing? First CRK. Maybe

It's a bit of an exaggeration, but she does get a lot of boxes. This Small Sebenza has a leopard machined in the handle, and gold thumb stud and gold lanyard stud. She'll love that part. If I give her a box cutter and razor blades as a gift, not only will that go over terribly, but I will likely find razor blades everywhere. This way I only have to be on the lookout for a single open knife somewhere in the house.

I know my hands are too big for this knife. And I generally don't use flippers so I am used to manual opening so it's not that. It's just a little stiff and the detent tension is high. I will take y'alls word for it that it will break in. And I'll take your word for it that it may grow on me/her.

If it hasnt been mentioned yet with the recommendations of disassembly, cleaning, amd lubrication... Taking the washers and lightly rubbing them on a strop to polish them up is a nice touch as well, and remember when lubricating that less is more. Too much will make the action inconsistent.

My wife liked it. I think. She definitely liked it more than the last knife I got her, which was a Pink Mini Commander that I think frightens her. We will see how much she uses it.

I will likely pick up a Large Sebenza Tanto or an Umnumzann. Not a standard drop point guy.

Look into the Insingo too, my favorite.

You’re not missing anything. The heavens don’t open up, you’re not going to hear angelic singing. Can’t say I’ve ever experienced that getting a new CRK.
Unfortunately, I sometimes feel like this is what I'm anticipating whenever I'm waiting for a new knife to arrive.

I've had my Mnandi for 6-7 months and it doesn't get too much usage, although I sometimes have it with me at work. But I find my Benchmade Valet and recently-purchased Spyderco Mantra more fun to use. If I'm completely honest, I just can't justify what I paid for this knife ($CAD and import tax were deadly!). It's a beautiful knife with impeccable quality but when I hold it in my hand the cost and value don't seem to balance out. It could be that I'm looking for a better user knife, say a small or large Sebenza, I'm not sure. I will hold onto my Mnandi longer but I have started to consider selling it and picking up a small Insingo... or getting 1-2 Spydercos or Benchmades.

So I'm not exactly sold on CRK based on my first purchase either. While the quality and much-touted tolerances are real, I find them to be rather subtle after owning a variety of nice knives. In a world of mediocre knives my Mnandi's action and build quality would stand leagues above everything else, but I think these days standards, materials, construction, and options have improved considerably and quickly, to the point where the fabled CRK quality is no longer infinitely better than other higher-end production knives.

I'm holding my Mnandi right now and will start carrying it daily for the next little while... it's making me feel guilty for writing all that :)

Not that there are any bad CRK products, but sometimes it is about finding the right model, size and configuration that fits you.

Go with the Insingo if you are not a standard drop point guy. Best of both worlds.
