What am I missing?

I seldom buy RC Cola, but I've never seen it sold in bags.:p
Doh!!!! :o Maybe I need to take a couple of days off.:o :footinmou
I should've written... "Crown Royal" bags. You know, the purty purkle ones with the yaller letters that a s'posedly goot whisky comes in? ;) :D
Don't blame me if'en ya like Crown Royal. I prefer my whisky from a single source and not blended and especially the Scotch Whiskeys/Whiskys, but it applies to all whisky. Why drink blended when you can drink the real thang?:p

To stay on topic I'll say it again, "Get a BGRS otherwise known as an 18" Ganga Ram Special!!!!":D

Yvsa, who was raised on single mash Mountain Dew, and not that crap that comes in a can, this came in a quart Mason fruit jar!!!!:p

Welcome to the Cantina. I'd recomend getting something in the 15 to 16.5" range at first. Possibly a BAS, 15" AK/Sirupati or 16.5" WWII/Chiruwa AK. Good size for learning and belt carry, plus they chop really well. After chopping with a 15 to 16.5" Khukuri other knives just don't seem do as good a job. :D

Fulloflead?

You might check a thread "This is my last post" or something like that. Started out as an declaration of why a guy would never participate in the HI Forum again, and after (roughly) hundreds of folks jumped in and wandered all over hell and back, I think the guy is now on his way to Nepal to hammer out rough forms for the kamis. (not sure, check thread.)

No flaming, little rancor, lotta help, good causes, and very little profiling of ego...that's what is here. Can't tell you what you have been missing.

Welcome.

Pendentive did a comparative analysis of khukuris and their profiles, etc. Check the FAQ for a review. It should give you an inkling of what you might like.

We have so much.

I came for the khuks and stayed for the people. Best bunch of folks around, full of wisdom, humor, technical expertise, compassion...

As far as which one to get first Uncle says you don't choose the khuk, it chooses you. My first and still fav is a wood 18" WWII by Kumar. The Mrs. has taken a liking to a 15" AK in horn with white metal fittings by Sher. I had a little 12" siru that I liked very much. I gave it to a really good guy who helped us out in a jam (Timmorn says thanks). I had a pair of 25" sirus but traded them, they were just too big for me (or maybe I was too small for them). The straight blades are good too, I have a little JKM-1 I'm working on a wood handle for. And I'd like to pick up a Kumar Karda.

But if I had to give a recommendation...something in the 15"-18" range. WWII, AK, BAS, Gelbu Special, sirupati, baby Ganga Ram. You can't go wrong.

Frank

definitely... its kinda nice getting your first khukuri and thinking how nice and pretty the mirror polishing is, but its even better to get your first one, and demolish the nearest dead tree with it...

for the price of 1 18" AK, you can get a 17" ak and a 12" ak :D with some change left over....

Welcome to the Cantina!

I'm down to "only" three HI kuks just now- and a HI-made ax that I'm having a custom handle put on, but I've given away at least three times as many, all to close friends and training partners.

As a few others have said, you might want to check out something in the 15-18" range, though an 18" AK or BGRS might be more than you want.

Currently, my favorite kuks are the 16.5" WW II, and 18 and 21" Chitlangis. Jonesing for one of those 17" AK villagers...

pain and grief over $65?

man, I wish I had it so easy....:D :p

Yeah, well, you're no longer a starving college student! (Fondly remembering days of middle-class employment. :D )

I've been debating for the last 2 weeks on whether or not to fork out the $500 for a new motor setup for my grinder...it's been agony. Finally did it yesterday....still hurts...

Buying lil' villagers for $50, on the contrary, is sweet relief....so much for so little!

FOL --
Welcome
browse the posts started by Bill Martino
look at lots of pix in those threads
and on the HI website.

One or two will reach out and grab you by the throat
unless you have a natural immunity to HIKV

Buy it
try it
show it to your friends
cut cabbage
chop trees

Bet you can't buy just one.......

If it wasn't tax time (paying out the a$$), I'd have bought all of the 12" AK's yesterday just to have give aways...seems like half of what I buy runs away from home!

not my fault....:D

I brought nearly 3 dozen to your house the other day....

You're right...that day I had friends over and ended up with more than I started with...but it's usually the other way around! I'd have kept one of yours if you had let me! ;-)

One thing, if you are used to microtechs the HI's will be something of a shock. Remember that these are hand forged and fitted. No jigs, or CNC use. Perfection won't be reached, if that is what you are looking for. Go for the blems at about half price ( half-price plus the cost of shipping - bout 10-15 bucks priority mail ). You may also have to put an edge on one now and then.
Blems can be purteed up.

Now I've told you what they are not, if you were at the Reno convention a while back, you'd have had a chance to go thru 20 or 30 khuks of all sizes and shapes. And you would have picked up one that you wouldn't have let go of.

Five or ten minutes later, you'd have put it under your arm to pull out your money and pay Uncle Bill, and you'd hold onto it til it was sold so no one else could take it away from you. It'd tell you "I was made for you", or " let's dance " to the martial arts, or " you can improve enough to be worthy of me ". Yes, they do talk to you.

Imagine yourself as Arthur Pendragon pulling Excalibur from the stone. There's a feeling of the kami's sweat and blood being forged into the khuk, a spirit to them. Imagine ( if you are a sci-fi fan ) Heinlein's Glory Road and picking up "Lady Vivamus" Not all will call to you but there's always a chance that the next one you buy will be your Holy Grail.

Every khuk is different than all the others. The ones that don't really seem alive will go to some deserving person as a magnificent gift. No machine made piece can match the feel of a forged blade.

Thanks for the VERY warm welcome, everybody! :D

But, I gotta be honest with you. I RARELY have occasion to use fixed-blade knives - I'm mostly into folders. I just really wanted to see what the BUZZ was all about. Now I know.

I may stop by from time to time because everyone seems so nice and it could be a nice place to hang out, but this just isn't my style.

Again, thanks everyone for the warm welcome and all the info and I consider myself more knife educated because of it, but these just don't quite fit my knife habits.

I hope I didn't waste anyone's time. :(

I'm glad I asked, though! :D
Take care, everyone!

It wasn't really my style either despite my love of big knives. But HIKV is a powerfull thing and it can slip up on you rather quickly. After many Khurks I want more and can't imagine not having one now. As said by many in this thread the poeple here alone are worth the visit.

is to be careless and remove a limb! Serious business here. They will chop!! Always make sure you read Uncle Bill's Safety thread before you use.

That said I like a 15" British Army Service as a carry piece. Nice and liteweight(Only in the World of HI Products!), but heavy enough to take on most tasks. My personal favorite is the 16.5 WWII. A little more heft than the 15" models, but not as fatiguing as the bigger boys. I got a hold of a 20" Ang Khola and it was too heavy for much use before tuckering me out. I ended up giving it to a hunting buddy who just about fell over when I said "If you like it it's yours" I've bought several knives from HI and have given away four to close friends that coveted them. I'm left with 15" AK and BAS and the standard WWII.

There is a warm fuzzy part of the operation that maybe doesn't get that much press. The Kami's(Knifesmiths) are generally a dirt poor lot and this is a cash cow for them. Uncle Bill's operation has really helped transform the lives of everyone associated with Birgorka. Steady, high paying wages(By Nepali standards) and a chance to have a crack at a college education here in the states has really made a difference. We make a difference and some grave robbing middleman that represents a 'relief agency' doesn't skim off the top and become rich in the name of charity. Their lives are better because of us and we are better because of their unique craft and skill.

This isn't really a forum dedicated to Khukuris. Yeah, we talk about them a LOT! But we cover just about every base imaginable and many topics have little or nothing to do with sharp, pointy things.

You can get a cheaper Khukuri out there, but you can't get a better one.
By the way,
Welcome-hope you enjoy the ride!
