what angle to use when sharpening my PM2

Here is sharpening video that explains the history of edges that you might enjoy. The guy is the founder of Spyderco and has probably sharpened a million knives.

Thanks for posting part 2. Really all the parts are great information. Lots of folks don't know that knives were not Spyderco's first product; it was the Sharpmaker sharpener.

If I remember Sal’s advice from the video it was to sharpen at 40deg and every now and again back bevel at 30deg to maintain the main bevel behind the micro bevel. This works fine as you would expect but I did find when I moved to sharpening some PM2’s (sure it’s the same story for any good steel) on an edge pro and wanted to move back to the factory profile it was harder than I expected to reach the edge when it had the 40deg sharpmaker edge on it. Basically it was a lot of work so the only thing I would say is be sure you want 40 and won’t want 30 a couple of days later :)

Resharpening the back bevel usually takes more time because more steel must be removed than would be if sharpening the MICRObevel. Different grinds have different back bevels.

Primary bevel from the factory is at 30°. This is coarsely ground.

You should put the 40° micro bevel on and hone it finely. It will be much more durable and can still be shaving sharp.

Other manufactures recommend 50° for general carry. (Worksharp) That's for junkier steel than Spydercos typically use.
