What Are Big Fixed Blade Knives For?

what are big blades for ?

fun ..

I personally dont consider a 7 inch blade to be "bigger" tho , more a medium length , but this is my personal opinion

some my more favorite bigger blades :

I prefer using a larger blade for everything from clearing a camp site , making access to the river bank to fish , splitting kindling , lopping bamboo and willows , taking out them dam scotch thistles and cobblers pegs , if Im using a stove of some kind , trimming firewood to manageable length

I prefer to use one of my knives to split kindling for the house .. seems safer to me than using a hatchet , my longer blade .. the 30 something inch one ( from memory ) does service as an axe as well ...

bigger blades are pretty easy to use as draw knives too , a bonus if youre going to do more than carve spoons for bush craft .. if youve ever made a woomera and spear / dart and alatal , youll know the benifits here in that versitility

Just random thoughts about what I use my bigger blades for anyway

the biggest thing .. it is just FUN to be swinging 24 inches of razor sharp steel around .

I like them , they are seriously , seriously good knives . Valiant Co blades , just recycled leaf spring , but they have all the goodness of hard edge , soft spine , sexy handles .. hold a scary edge for way longer than they should .I have bought a few of their blades so far . always good stuff .

You question is one that I have been wrestling with for some time. I intend to buy a Kabar BK-7. Most of what was said applies to some degree. I think you have to learn how to use a larger blade for normal cutting. Just about anyone can wack at a tree or tree limb with a knife or a hatchet/axe. But take that larger blade to the kitchen or camp site and try to peel an apple or potato... that takes some practice. It is sort of up to you to learn to become comfortable with the blade and you may never really become comfortable. If you find that you want something a bit smaller, give the BK16/17 a try. I like mine.

To answer your question "What's a big fixed blade good for?".... today, I mostly grab a smaller blade because I'm more comfortable using one. The big ones are sure cool though.
