What are bowies good for?

Doug, if you want to talk to a top maker that just might be able to make you a nice damascus Bowie with a 9" or 10" blade for around that price you mentioned, get in touch with Bailey Bradshaw. This guy is outstanding and his prices are really reasonable.

I second the advice on the Becker knives. My first choice would be the BK-5, but sadly it has been discontinued... HOWEVER, head on over to the makers and manufacturers forum and look up the Camillus forum. In it Will Fennell mentions where to find some "lost" BK-5's that are available. Do yourself a huge favor and get one of those. My second BK&T choice would be the BK-9 or combat Bowie. Heck of a knife for a great price.
My recommendation for a custom maker that is making great knives for a reasonable price would be Craig Camerer. He is on BFC here under the name C-Camerer. Check out his stuff and send him an email. He is a great guy and would certainly take care of your bowie needs. I have 4 of his knives, and I ain't done with him yet!
Feel free to email me if you have any questions,
Mongo
