What kind of wood is the Vanguard handles made from. I know they are listed as differant materials (rosewood, wood, cocabola, etc). But all the wood handles I see have the same exact pattern. What are they made from. No complaints just wondering.

Anyone have an idea where I could look to find out? I've search this site and know no more than I did before.

I think that most are just dyed laminated hardwood. I would email Joe Houser for an exact answer. I am almost positive that the 192BR handles are dyed laminated hardwood. The laminations give them all the same "pattern"

ok thanks. I just was really curious. I just keep finding myself going back to Vanguard. I've tried other knives in the past year but I have to say I love the size and shape and the Vanguard keeps drawing me back.

 I surely cannot argue with that! I have ummm a *couple* :D

I kind of got caught up in higher priced brand. While they are nice knives and I cant say anything bad about them, I just think the design of the Vanguard is perfect. The only one I have is the AG. I would love some differant handles on them. I even though about buying a rubber AG and having it rehandled. I would love to see Buck and Cabela get together for a stag AG Vanguard.

Hi K,

Take a look at the Bass Pro Shop. They have a few stag vanguards in their Buck line up. If you get one please post a photo...I've been thinking about one of those to add to my other vanguards :).

Hi Dave,

I don't have anything with Rams horn...The 08 Texas star 500 will be a first. I had read that the Rams horn has a particular odor to it:eek:. Is that true:confused:. I do know that Rams horn cost more that stag...at least that's what I see!!!!

Hey hey John!

Odor? I don't recall ever hearing of an odor from Ram's horn..........it was his breath that was bad :barf:
I hadn't taken a sniff-test but I don't notice any odor whatsoever. The first exposure I had to the material was a set of custom grips for a pistola. They were inner horn and I did not notice any strange waif in the air. The RH Vanguard is of the outter or surface horn, at least mine is, and again no odor:confused: .........but I do smoke:o Perhaps working and shaping the material gives of an unpleasant aroma:confused: Now, I have heard that working and sanding the coal-black type of ebony can be lethal when the dust is inhaled. I learned that after the fact

Still living-

I've thought about both of those at BP. I just thought that a stag AG in s30v would be an awsome user. I dont know if the stag one from BP being in 420hc would be that much differant in use than the s30v. Anyhow both of those from BP would be a nice piece to add even if it wasnt as a user.

Wow, I hope I don't get sick from some of the stuff I've been playing with!!!!! As I was cutting up a deer antler I got off ebay; I noted that it was not a shed antler...I'm not sure if it is even legal to bring one of these here with CWD issue in some other states:confused:

Well Dave...did you go to sniff your knife handle for me???? LOL...I remember a thread a long time ago when we were all doing some funny things with our Buck knives:D

Well, John I guess if you wanted a sniff-test done in real time I would do that for you but as it stands, naw, working from memory of when I handled the the knife in question:p
Perhaps I was not a contributor to the 'Forum when folks around here were doing things to their knives ......do I wanna know?

I may order one of those stags from BP. I'm currently bidding on 3 knives on ebay. So if I dont win one of them this week I think I will order the stag.

I bought 2 last year for the son/son inlaw that were Ion Fusion....Consider that feature, as they both said its the Sharpest and Best knife either has ever had....

Most of the wood on those handles are generally accepted to be Pakkawood from Fibron Corp. However, there is no telling if other suppliers are used. The base wood is laminated and resin impregnated birch dyed to the desired color.

I heard that rams horn is almost indestructible.

Hey Jelly!

Rams horn is tough stuff! Think about it...... very akin to a 'natural' fiberglass. It is very fibrous and lots of yellow, gold, tan, and brown hues. But the Rams battling it out for the Miss Sheepys can't go around having their ..ah...horns break off now can they?

Dave
BTW- how is the newest family member doing? A little girl, right?

Shes doing good. I'll have to post pictures of the family . ( Or would that be hijacking my own thread?) I'm kind of stuck deciding on Stag or Ram . Dont ask if its going to be a user, I have no idea.
