Since the thread on the BM-e got closed, I could not take this topic further. To me the Busses are closer to customs than anything, but like Horton said they are cut from CNC and ground from there, so technically they are semi- customs, what are they to you?

A production item is one of which multiple iterations are made. A custom item is unique, made to suit one specific set of circumstances or one user. That is really all there is to it.

The methods by which something are produced have no bearing on its custom/production status. Production items might be made entirely by hand. Custom items might be made entirely by machine. Production items might be made by highly time-consuming processes, custom items might be made very quickly.

It is also a mistake to confuse custom-ness with quality. They are two completely separate concepts. Some custom items (houses come to mind) are very poorly constructed. Some production items are of very high quality.

All the Busse knives I own came from Busse as production knives. Some of them have been custom-ized by myself and others, but that's different than a commissioned, custom knife.

They're production knives, because they make more than one of them. Good production knives, but production knives nonetheless.

Woah !

That other thread was ridiculous...

I believe for the most part Busses are production blades but for short runs, for the most part. There are always customs, one offs and such.

very drunk !! drink up people !

Cheers, mate! A little early over here for much drinking, though. Well, right now, that is. Give it a couple of hours and I'll be hiding under the table singing some weird stuff. :D

I believe the term is "semi-production", with a custom shop. :)

Drinking but not drunk. Semi Production or production customs seems appropriate. Other companies put great care, materials, thought, and foresight into their products but nobody matches that freaking warranty or the personal touch. People, quality, style, and reliability (warranty) make a difference in marketing these things. Jerry and the crew really do set the bar pretty damn high.

I think of most Busses as quality production knives.

I think of a custom knife as truly being customized to the consumer's own desires. The maker listens to what the consumer wants and tries to produce this knife as closely as possible. There is often some give and take in negotiating a custom order since the maker has ideas about what will work and what won't.

Busse does make customs, but the wait is long and the price is up there.

I'm really not sure what constitutes a semi-custom--a production knife that is somehow modified by the maker based on what the consumer/user wants? Anyhow, for "custom" to come into the equation for me, the consumer's wants have to be considered. I wouldn't use the term for a knife that is modified based just on what the maker wants. I guess, since you can pick colors/coatings/slabs, Busse production knives could be considered semi-custom in this regard. However, no major changes are happening to the platform; we're mainly talking cosmetics or handle width.

Busse is a Production knife company.

When Jerry was making them individual before the start of the Busse company they were Custom knives.

If Jerry had not went production "2 weeks" may have meant 10 years, so I'm very glad they are production knives.

I think the way they do their business is semi-custom with some full custom work out of their custom shop.

Combat grades are "production" and the knives from the custom shop are "custom". Any way you look at it...Busses are one of the best in either class:thumbup:

Most are production.
The 'customs' from the custom shop are semi custom.
If you talk to the man, give him specs and he makes it...it's custom.

you guys are all wrong, and making this too complicated. busse knives are magic. :D

If the steel isn't hand pounded on an anvil and sharpend by hand the knife is production as far as I'm concerned.
