That would be known as forging and they are usually called handmade knives, or hand forged...

There are a lot of knifemakers out there who make customs, but do not forge.


If the steel isn't hand pounded on an anvil and sharpend by hand the knife is production as far as I'm concerned.
 
i would say Semi_customized production cause you do get to customize the production chassis with different scales and finishes after your choice within the offered configuration parts.

but because of the fact that their will be more then one knife made with the same configuration you chose i is not a custom.

the fact that they are made on orders adds to the semi-custom part.
cause a pure production knife like BM, emerson and so on, is made in quantities regardless of how many who actually want's one.
my five cents.
 
Fore me, limited production. I usually buy CG and LE model, which I think are basically limited production.

I'd rate the Custom Shop models/enhancements as true custom.
