What are my chances???

Hi all. I bought an older model mean street from a fellow forum member. It is INFI and has the older grey handles with the SS bolts. It has a smooth finish on the handle and that makes it a little hard to keep a hold of. I have a Basic 3 with the resperiene C handle (I know I messed that spelling all up) and it is easy to use. But I don't wanna use it too much as it was a gift from a very special friend and I don't want to buger it up. So my question is... What are my chances of getting that handle off of my mean street so I could wrap it in cord or even resin soaked cloth? Something to give it texture. the mean street I have is a little handle heavy and with the slick handle it can try to fly out of my hand when fliping it around. So guys... Andy... what should I do about this? And does removing the handle void my warranty? I use my MS as my everyday carry user and it's good for self defense so I'd like to make it a little more stealthy and more stable in my hand. Thanks for any and all help here.

Hey Ryu, check back a few weeks (months) for a discussion about taping the handles. There were some good ideas that might be a better choice than to remove the handles.

Ryu - another option is to texture the handle manually (I did this once a few years ago on a Buck "Special" with paper micarta handles). If you have a dremel or other rotary tool, or even just some small files, you can cut a groove or checker pattern into the existing material and it won't take long to do.

Busse has commented on removing bolts before :

Personally I found the grip on my BM a little thin and cord wrapped right over the Micarta slabs.

Concerning the warrenty, Busse has commented on this in the past and to get his exact words just do a search. Basically my understanding is that if you do some modifications then just the part modified is no longer warrentied. So if you replaced the Micarta with Stag, then the Stag grip is not under warrenty but the tang and blade is.

Removing the handles on that particular Mean Street would devalue the knife considerably, as those handles mark the last of the hand shaped slabs on Mean Streets, being replaced by the diamond quilting process.

My suggestion is to leave that particular knife alone and let me explore the possibility of getting you a cord wrapped Mean Street.
