What are some good stockman's to build a collection?

First off, I want to thank everyone for the help received with my knife information. It's helped to rebuild my interest in collecting again.
A friend of mine wants a couple of my new knives (benchmade 690, microtech ludt etc.) and I've asked for some stockmans in return.
Where's a good place to start? Would I be better off getting a few from Case, or are Boker collectible as well? Any particular handles? I'm partial to the tigerstripe Case's, but that's just me.

Any advice is, as usual, greatly appreciated.

Grab a MIB Camillus or two. Camillus closed its doors in February, and there are a few around. Starting to get more expensive on ebay, but still around. A couple of pre-2004 Schrades if you can find them. From there, Bokers, Cases, they're all nice.

I have a couple of pre-2004 Schrades, a 340T and a 897UH. Is it safe to assume the Uncle Henry has plastic handles?

Queen also makes Schatt & Morgan which are very nice IMO they have a gunstock stockman, and Case, and some German ones are nice. What ever you like just try and stay away from the far east ones,You'll do fine.

Yes, actually they called it "Staglon", it's a synthetic known as "Delrin" that was shaped to resemble Stag.

As far as collecting, pick the style of Stockman that you like to personally carry the most, and then try different companies offerings.

Before long, you'll have a nice collection going! :D

I think it's finding out my old boker is from the 1930's that has me the most excited.
Are any particular handle materials better for collecting than others? I'd assume the stag and mastodon are obvious choices, but I like the flashy stuff as well. MoP is pretty swanky, to say the least ;)

A member (not me) is selling a used Queen D2 Stockman in the forums sale section. Last time i looked it was still up for grabs.

In there are Queen, Case, Eye Brand, Schatt & Morgan, Mooremaker, Schrade, Buck, and Cold Steel.

Haven't found a Boker I like with good walk and talk, but I know it's out there somewhere. Also have thought about Bulldog and Hen & Rooster.

Somebody school me on the Camillus stockman knives... what is the Rough Cut series? Were these knives made in NY before the factory closed?

Any good? Or should I look for an older Camillus stockman?

I love the blue one! What make is that?
The 2 I have look like the 2nd and 4th from the bottom, right hand side.

The blue one is the Schrade FFA 8OT. It has the carbon 8OT blades, blue delrin scales, and the Future Farmer's of America shield.

If you brouse E-bay and come across any Camillus stockmen with the brown jigged delrin handles, they are very tough using knives at a moderate price. Some of them came with carbon steel.

Case CV bladed stockmen are always a good bet.

If you can get any of the older Eye-brand stockmen with the red deer stag, you'll have a very nice looking as well as good cutting knife. Same for the older Puma stag stockmen, but I fear that both the new Eye-Brands and Puma's are made by another company someplace else and stamped with the name.

Are you collecting or building a stable of users?

If you don't mind synthetic handles and stainless steel for a daily beater, the modern 300 series Bucks like the 301 stockman and 303 cadet, are very tough using tools. It all depends on what you want.

Its hard to go wrong with any good stockman.

I have enough users that I wouldn't mind getting some just to collect. Then again, I'm hard pressed not to carry any knife I own.

I don't think it's a series, they read Roughcut Tobacco Stockman etched onthe blade. They aren't stamped but I would assume that they were made before they closed the plant.I picked one up a couple weeks ago,it's 3 7/8in,a nice solid knife I've been EDCing it some. What the heck,if the price is right,it's just another knife.

nice collection! How do you like that Mooremaker? I have been itching to get one.

For starters:
Schrade 8OT
Schrade 34OT
Camillus 67
Imperial 4434
Case 3318
Case CA128
All are still available to some extent and are great Stockman's for the money.

Guyon,
Very nice collection. I have many of the same. What is interesting about your photo is to see how each of the makers have their knives seat in handle when closed.

One of the things I like most about my Mooremakers is the way the baldes seat deep into the handle when closed. You'll notice the main clip blade seats really low, but just high enough to grab the nail nick. The same is said for the sheepsfoot blade. On almost all other brands the sheepsfoot blade is higher in the closed position.
