What are some great budget knives?

Swiss Army knife. Huntsman/Fieldmaster Evo Grip 14/15 or 17/18 (14 and 17 lack the wood saw. Fieldmaster, 15, and 18 have a #2 philips screwdriver on the back tool set. The others have the multipurpose corkscrew.)
Other options include the ALOX Cadet, Pioneer/Pioneer X, and Farmer/Farmer X. The X models add the spring loaded scissors.
The scissors come in mighty handy. If you use scissors to remove a loose thread from your lady's garment or a no longer tame hair from her, trim a broken/split or hangnail, or to remove a 🤬🤬 thorn from her hair or the cat's fur coat, no one will raise an eyebrow. Go to use a knife for the same thread, hair or thorn ... you might have some 'splainin to do ... especially if there's a LEO watching.

The Opinel's are great, but never, I mean NEVER, under estimate a Douk-Douk. I first encountered them when I was on a TDY job in the Army combat engineers. We got sent down to the old Wheelus Air Force base in Libya, from our base in then West Germany. Wheelus was a tactical fighter base ( in those pre Gadafi days) and they needed the runways lengthened to accommodate B-52's passing through on training missions. As Engineers, we had the gear and personal with re-enforced concrete gear and know how to do it. Spent a few months in Libya.

Most of our labor, was hired local workers, to shovel sand and mix into the cement mixers, and carry whatever. Local Libyan guys. They all had beat up Douk-Douks that were used for any use a sharp edge was needed. Got sharpened on any available rock when needed. I was wondering through the Arab bazaar off duty and they had whole boxes of them for sale cheap. I got one to play with out of curiosity. WOW, enlightening.

A very tough, reliable, low cost knife that can take some real heavy use as well as abuse and come up grinning. No wonder they are the choice of French Foreign Legion soldiers. If absolutely needed as a weapon, the Arab guys would just drop them on the ground and stomp in them with a heel of a work boot. Instant fixed blade. A little prying with a screw driver made it a folder again, if they survived the knife fight.

Douk-Douk's are a tough nut!
That is awesome, I have heard of the being fixed with a hammer, but not done and re-done like that, awesome. I am pleased to know what a rugged knife it is, as I always suspected with that being the, by far, STRONGEST slipjoint I have ever had the pleasure to use, it feels locked in the hand. Reinforces my already confident opinion of them, everyone should own some of these classics listed, jsut as efficient cutting tools, it's a bonus that they're so old and a part of history! Of the old ones, the Douk is the newest (1929) but still, such a history wtih the FFL cannot be forgotten, and that rich history is why I love 'em :) I love knowing what was historically used as tthe do-all knives of various organizations.

!!! I was trying to make my list as exhaustive as possible, looking for all the countries knives I could, looking for all the classics from USA to Taiwan to Germany to Japan... and I somehow forget to mention the Swiss Army Knife... 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️ that was a fail. Glad you got the suggestion lol

If you are looking for a tough fixed blade for beating in the woods and at camp.

I've come to the conclusion that probably nothing will beat a SP-53.
I own knives six times as expensive that can't hold a candle to it for chopping and battoning

Talk about depressing.....lol. :/

Thanks for the suggestions I'm actually from Canada so I can only order from warriors and wonders, blades canada. They have the rat 1 with a nylon handle d2 which I was considering previously, seems to be around the same price 65$cad, do you think that's a fair price without the upgraded handle material?

I just bought something from bf sponsor/member, knifecenter... I'm in Canada also. So your options shouldn't be so limited, sadly, local sellers mark up knives by a much larger % than south of the border

Folders: any SAK, Ontario Rat 1&2, Kabar Dozier, Buck 110/112 slim select, Cold Steel Tuff Lite, Cold Steel Working Man, Cold Steel Pro Lite are all excellent and inexpensive knives.

Fixed Blades: Kabar/Becker line is hard to beat, ESEE makes good moves at reasonable prices (in my opinion), Buck Pak Lite series, Buck Bucklite series, Mora (even though I don’t like Scandi grind knives), Brisa/Enzo has good ones as well.

My current collection, they are all under 70 CA$.

You can also buy knife from Whitemountainknives on ebay.ca, a known and nice retailer fast yet low shipping cost. I currently have one on the way from them.
I personally find warriorsandwonders a little more pricey overall. They use an AI to set price on the website, therefore their price jump up and down in a very odd manner. Sometimes you get good deal with them, but most of the time you are going to get a bad deal. Currently, Grohmann has seasonal sale, W&W is having them slightly cheaper than the website.

The Ka-Bar Dozier folding hunter is always my first mention when the topic of great budget knives comes up. It’s a fantastic knife for the price. Great design, light, cheap, AUS-8 steel, made in Taiwan.

W&W has a nice filter search, you can filter by price, material etc. I'd use that to find some you like, then come back to see the general consensus on those options.

Marttiini - Finland
Hultafors - Sweden
Joker - Spain
Antonini - Italy
BPS - Ukraine
Varusteleka Skrama and Jääkkäripuukko - Finland

BPS have been around for a while, just below the radar for most of us until Jack Black gave them an introduction here, prompting a minor buying rush. Good quality, well-made fixed blades in 1066 carbon steel, plus some stainless models.4964CAD3-1CE1-42EF-A846-90244E74DFB8.jpeg70317E52-ED9E-4F78-A178-1FD31453092D.jpeg

I have one of the top BPS knife in 1066 (aka 65G, a well known sword making steel in East Europe) from amazon for 40CA$ (free shipping). Mundane tough stuff comes with good leather sheath at such price, the sheath alone would be about 10$.

However, ever since the stock on amazon rant out a few months ago, the price has increased (currently 80CA$ before tax), or you have to buy directly form BPS's website, ebay and Etsy, whic are about 50CA$+15CA$ shipping. With the current situation in Ukraine, I don't know how long it will take to ship.

Amazon had stock a couple of weeks ago when I ordered the two shown here, and got them in three days. I am still waiting for the one I ordered from the BPS site. I have no particular expectations about when or whether it will arrive.

Kershaw Link or Leek, assisted open, USA made and usually available for under a hundred bucks. The Link has been my primary EDC for over a year now with no issues whatsoever.

My vote is for the CIVIVI Brazen. Comes with 14C28N blade steel and only $83 CAD.
