What are some high quality beefy tactical folder that are around?

My first choice, and EDC, is the Camillus Aftermath. It and the Maxx are as heavy-duty as any folder I've handled.

In shorter framelocks I really like the Camillus Dominator. And if you're willing to consider a non-framelock, but without giving up any strength, check out the Spyderco Chinook, Manix, and Lil Temperance. The clack of my Chinook locking open is amazing! :D

I am thinking that the Large Sebenza with the double thumb stud and swedge will be just about the perfect Tactical Folder. As far as quality goes I don't think anyone can beat the Sebbie. What is it now... 4 out of the last 5 years Chris has won the manufacturing excellence award at the Blade Show.

I've never owned a better knife and am so convinced now that I never will that I am going to stop looking.

I've carried a Small Sebbie for years and years! The other night while looking at the forums I saw some information on stripping, cleaning and lubing the Sebenza, so I spent the evening doing just that. I completely cleaned each and every part and then with a little Miltech - 1 and a hair dryer I lubed it and it is the smoothest knife I can imagine. The cool thing is I know I can return it to this state at any time with just a little time and Miltech.

I have a couple of other Sebbies that are tucked away. A large Classic Woodie, a couple of Small Classics, one back up for me and one that I will give my son on his 21st B'day in a couple of months and recently I picked up a Large Sebbie with the double thumb stud and swedge that I think will be the perfect tactical folder. The Sebbie that I picked up has a unique design on it but that doesn't really matter to me. I am going to carry this baby and use it daily!!! The only possible modification that I would consider is possibly adding the serrations that Chris does.

I've owned ATCFs by Bob T and a couple of Pat Crawford's knives but I just keep coming back to the Sebbie. It is rock solid. User maintainable. Good steel. Comfortable in the hand. What else can I say??

you can`t go wrong with Bram Franks GUNTING made by Spyderco.Strong and very sharp!mine is with me most days

Joe ,
I also like & carry the G everyday! If they are looking for something "bigger"get a TOPS MAGNUM FOLDER,lockup is tight &
that SUCKER is huge!!

I am also a fan of the REKAT folders. I have five or six in various models, and have used two of them on an extended, daily basis, with no problems. I'm sorry that REKAT is no longer in business, and although I understand some people experienced quality control problems with some of their products, the ones I own I rate on the same level as my Benchmades.

Check out the CRKT M-21's. These are very beefy and solid folders. They have T-6 aluminum handles and thick AUS-8A blades. These are the toughest folders that I've seen come out of Taiwan.

Wow, I didn't think anyone else would bring up CRKT but I am glad to not be alone on this. I don't have an m21 but the CRKT M1 designed by Greg Lightfoot is an extremely stout knife with decent blade steel and a very cool blade shape. Sort of a tantoized drop point or maybe a drop ointized tanto. Very solid knife with nice handle shape and useful blade shape. Oh yeah and they cost like fifty bucks. Mine has been getting as much pocket time as my usual edc, an MT amphib.

I love my Al Mar SERE 2000. Great blade shape, holds an edge well, and feels beefy!

If you want a tuff tactical folder for a good price , with a worldclass lock and great warranty , all for about $150.00 ; take a good look at the Benchmade 520 .It's also way smooth , and comes in an auto version if you qualify legally .

Another vote for the Al Mar. I looked at a lot of different knives including Emersons and Buck Striders and ended up with the SERE. It's a liner lock but it's built heavy and the knife is put together better than most of the production knives in it's price range.

Besides what has been mentioned; I like the Spyderco ATR, The Microtech LCC and Microtech Socom Elite, Dalton SOB I and II, the SERE 2000 and BM 710.

There are lots of good framelocks out there.

Two with interesting design attributes are the Hinderer Firetac with the lock stabilizer (now incorporated on Strider as well), and the Scott Cook Lochsa with the integral design (now incorporated by nobody because, according to Tom Mayo, no one is crazy enough to try).

wait, what's so special about the "integral design?"

or better yet, what's the integral design?

i searched lochsa and saw some pics and it pretty much looks like a sebenza to me.

shed some light?

The Lochsa was influenced by the Sebenza. There is no denying that, especially since Scott Cook was the CRK shop foreman for several years. However, Scott Cook took the design to another level. Instead of using two slabs like most framelocks, Scott Cook milled the entire handle from a single piece of titanium. The knife is the very definition of simplicity--in design. I count only six pieces in the Lochsa. Blade, handle, ball that goes in the detent, washers, and the pivot.

The Lochsa's execution is another thing altogether though. To my knowledge there is no other maker that makes knives this way or even tries to. In order to get everything to fit, it all has to be perfect. No wonder Tom Mayo said nobody is crazy enough to try.

Take the hit and buy a Sebenza. It is a bit pricey if it's your first but in the long run it will save you money. The best folder out there hands down.

I mentioned this knife on the first go-round in Jan. but since I now have two of them in my possession I just have to mention them again, Rick Hinderer Firetac Extreme's! For a little bit more than what you'll pay for a Sebenza you can have what amounts to a Sebenza on steroids! The regular Firetacs are beefy in their own right, but the Extreme really kicks it up a notch in terms of BEEFY!! :D :D
