What are some unknown knife brands?

Check out Klotzli knives. Been around for a while but I don't see people talk about them. Very high quality, interesting company history. My father purchased one like 18 years ago. First knife I ever saw with carbon fiber handle scales. They made a early liner lock for Michael Walker, and they produced a variation on that knife for Spyderco.

Puma Knives maybe? ...

I have a very nice Pumaster #6396 bowie I bought about 45 years ago. Very nice quality, sambar stag handles. It has a tiny dot in the blade where it was individually Rockwell hardness tested. They still do that.

My folks gave me a Muela folder they brought back from Europe. Heavy but nicely made.

How about G. Sakai? They make the Salt series for Spyderco, but they also have an interesting lineup of their own. I particularly like their SAK-style Fieldman Trekking Tool. ZDP-189 main blade is super nice in that style of knife.

Le Sabot and Parapluie à l'épreuve are french manufacturers specialized in traditional and regional slipjoints. Hard to find, but worth the time.

Hubertus is a lesser known knife company. Hell, I even forgot the name so I had to google "German Folding Bowie" just to remind myself what it was. They make some really cool traditional autos.

No idea what their quality is like, but it looks great and the prices aren't outlandish for a lot of their knives. I would like to try out one of their lever lock auto's one day, I've never owned an automatic like that before.

Ok, how about some new, high quality brands?

There are countless custom makers so I won’t get into that. But....

Pohl Force and Scorpio Design out of Germany.

Bastinelli out of France.

Bestech, Ch and many more out of China.

Blade Culture International out of the philipines.

Dustarr out of Israel.

Shivworks from USA.

There are just so many. Too many to name especially if you aren’t being more specific about what type knife you are looking for.

any of you guys ever heard of IMACASA?

Hubertz in Germany. They're lever automatics.
Skif Knives. A Ukrainian company that outsources to china. Similar to Kershaws imports but better designs.

I think Grohmann from Canada may be a bit lesser known.
They don't have a subforum here and you just don't see their knives everyday.

TSD Combat Systems is a brand I rarely see mentioned.

Max Venom is another good one.

TSD is awesome. The Grab and stab and gang unit are on my want to buy list.

Another unknown brand is Combative Edge. They make some pretty decent stuff.

What about the fate of long forgotten brands like ...

Relegated to "has beens" or just completely "out of the loop"?
I haven't forgotten about the UTICA cutlery company, but it's just that the only store you can walk into for their knives is probably smkw I also have heard that their traditional folders are a bit rough which would explain why their not talked about much.

As far as CKC goes, they no longer have a Prov.RI factory so it would seem someone else makes their knives for them.

Maybe coast. They are more known for their flashlights but I purchased one of their knives, the fx350 for $20 and it was AWESOME for the money. A really cool design too. I dont know how their other models are though but they do look kind of cheesy. I ended up giving to my friend because I am taking chinese made knives out of my collection, but he seems to love it too.
Mine was this model:

Colonial is awesome, i heard some of their knives have scales made out of the same material they make construction hats out of.

There was a thread about them coming out with an OTF but I guess it never surfaced.

Those kutmaster knives are ugly imho. They need to hire a designer. Look like 5$ gas station specials

Fantoni is lesser known than the big Maniago brands, but has probably the best heat-treat (vacuum/cryo).

Also the various Seki City makers are not well known outside Japan. Those include G.Sakai, Hattori, Moki, etc. Most high-end "Made in Japan" knives, including Spyderco, are OEM'd by one of these companies, but they have their own product lines.

I own a Fantoni and a Moki. Both interesting knives.

You're probably right
Pretty sad when one thinks of some of these legacy statessides brands.

OTF colonial?
Hmm, not the most original design...

Wonder if the end product matches the suggested retail...
Yup, it's too bad about kutmaster...
