I'm looking to buy an old, used Hawkbill folder but am not sure which brand had the best reputation for their time. Anyone care to share their thoughts and maybe help me decide? At the moment I'm leaning heavily towards the Camillus brand but am open for other suggestions. Tell me why you believe your brand to be better or best! :)

Well, since I'm seeking old/used from $25 to $100. Got one in mind that's more expensive? Of course after brand, condition being paramount to its worth...and then there's manufactured period - 1940s - 50s...

My thought is that you can get a new one from Spyderco for under $100. Opinel has one for under $25 new.

My dad always used a Klein or Case when he was working. He moonlighted as an electrician and would use them to strip cable and God knows what else. They were always beat to death and abused so no clue as to the real quality, but they seemed to be good cheap working mans knives. If I was buying one today I would grab a Great Eastern Harvester.

Short version: I can't answer your question but here is a related story. ;)

Hello Rob,

I've seen a few Klein folders, made in Chicago I believe. If I'm not mistaken they were made by Camillus for Klein but I could be wrong. Thanks!

Your best bet would be to take a look in the traditional subforum for someone who has some info about the old 3 layer "TL-29's".

The TL-29 is also known as the electricians knife, though most will know the model by number. The old three bladed versions had a Pruner/hawk bill primary blade.

If you want any other knives that require a bit less pocket realty, I would look for old "pre-war" pruners (a hawkbill built prior to WW2). They can be found by many companies, Hammer, Camillus, GEO Schrade, NYCKO, and Plenty others.
