What are the best folding knives in each price range?

maybe you could return the favor.....what are some good choices in a takedown .22 cal rifle for survival.....or should i look at some other caliber?

but it must be a take down that could fit in a (large) backpack

Damn,

You know I hate these threads it reminds me how many knives I need to buy.

bill_G,
There are not a lot of takedown .22s. Marlin made one called the Papoos (spelling?) and Charter Arms made one called the AR-7. The AR-7 could stow the bbl and action compeatly inside the hollow plastic buttstock. The AR-7 would also float in both stowed and non-stowed set-up. It was very light as well, I think about 4 1/2" lbs IIRC.

The Marlin was higher quality but also heavier. It could be taken down and fit in a backpack but it had a solid wood buttstock so it couldn't stow inside itself. It looked like an average .22lr Marlin except it had no forarm and it could be taken down for camping, hikeing, ect.

I am not sure if either are still being made. Since the Assult Weapons Ban has recently died, you can now get folding stocks and hi-cap mags again! I would go with a Ruger 10/22 with a folding stock and some 30 round mags. You can get any type of aftermarket part for the 10/22 so you can make it into anything from a heavy benchrest target rifle to a ultra-lightweight backpacking gun or a .22lr cal assult type rifle.

If you are good with a handgun, they make a few that are accurate enough to be used in a survival situation and they pack a lot easier than any rifle. I would go with a scoped Ruger MKII for the ultimate in accuracy out of a pistol.

I think your parameters are restrictive. What kind of gun could you get for $200? Many production knives MSRP for near the $200 mark. I think in the $300-$500 is where you see the best quality. Beyond that you're paying for a name and or fancy materials. Knives are a lot simpler than a gun. With a folding knife you are dealing with handle material, lock type, blade shape/length and type of steel. I like a frame lock and S30V steel. Between $400 and $500 you can get a large variety of custom knives. I think if you want a nice folder you need to go to the higher dollar knives. Also an important consideration is what you intend to do with the knife.

You like S30V and framelock? Have you got the CUDA Dominator? S30V blade and titanium framelock. Oh yeah, about $158 for mine, very nice, I thought.

Inexpensive under 50 bucks you can't beat the Spyderco Endura line. Up to a 100 bucks you can't beat the BM offerings like the Griptilian, 710, Stryker, etc. Over a 100 bucks hands down for me the best are the Buck/Strider lg. spear point or even the mini, and the SOG S2K. I think these are the two best production liner locking folders made today. I should aslo add if you can find one reasonable a BM 975 which blows just about any Emerson I have owend out of the water. I have only owned the Commander, Raven, Mach 1, CQC 7's, and La Griffe. These are just my opinions though. The Buck customer service is far above average in my opinion and they now have a customer for life. keepem sharp
