We have not found an effective way to measure the grit. the stone is not put together with measurable particles like most abrasives. We guess the grit to be about 400, 800 & 1200 for the 3 grits. This is a guess based on "feel", although cuting speed is gerally quicker than comparably numbered grits.

Allanm - I have not used or compared the DMT stone to ceramic as far as the finished edge. I would however like to point out that "improvement" depends on the goal. Some materials need a rough edge for efficient cutting (which changes the direction of the word "improvement").
The actual test, you'll have to do yourself. (nothin' wrong with firsthand knowledge, then you get to share?)
BTW DMT recommends using water when sharpening with their stones. I use their coarser stones for many of my sharpening projects and would agree.
