Are Boy Scouts authorized to carry a folding knife with a blade smaller than the width of a palm in NJ?

And what is the "legal" way to carry a knife? In pocket, in a belt pouch, or what?

this section seems appropriate:

2C:39-6. f. Nothing in subsections b., c. and d. of N.J.S.2C:39-5
shall be construed to prevent... (2) A person carrying a firearm
or knife in the woods or fields or upon the waters of this State
for the purpose of hunting, target practice or fishing, provided
that the firearm or knife is legal and appropriate for hunting
or fishing purposes in this State and he has in his possession
a valid hunting license, or, with respect to fresh water fishing,
a valid fishing license;

the 'palm' rule, i have only seen that here on the forums, is not law anywhere i know of. im not sure where this comes from. states or cities with restrictions on blade length will give the exact measurement, ie 3", 3.5", ETC.

re: blade length and minors:

2C:39-9.1... Any person who sells any hunting, fishing,
combat or survival knife having a blade length of five
inches or more or an overall length of 10 inches or more
to a person under 18 years of age commits a crime of the
fourth degree...

'lawful use' seems to be the theme of new jersey state codes. that is, hunting, camping, etc. i see nothing regarding method of carry.

does that mean that if a minor carrys a 3" knife in NJ, its perfectly legal (since it's less than 10")?

I spent my entire life in NJ and have never had any trouble with carrying a knife, but I consider myself lucky. As a kid (I'm now creeping up on 60), I can remember the 3-finger blade length rule but that proved to be an old wives tale. NJ does have laws against switchblades, gravity knives, balisongs, autos including conversions, etc. but I've never seen the actual law. I just heard that double edged blades (daggers) may be unlawful, also.

As to the "legal" way to carry a knife... I've carried a Schrade stockman in my pocket since '63-'64 with no problem and started carrying a Buck 110 in my other pocket until I had a special belt sheath made for it. No problems so far.
