When I think of what a bushcraft knife should be, a few things come to mind. First, I know any knife can be used as a bushcraft knife, but i have gone through a lot of knives and the two that excel are a scandi and a nice convex, for me atleast. I picture a Skookum or a Brian Andrews Terrasur, but thats only becasue i like that style.
I used to be into real thick blades, went through my Busse kick, then Fehrmans, now I like thinner knives that are better slicers over choppers. For me, a knife should be able to cut well, and everything else second. So, no matter what you chose for a bushcraft type knife, make sure it has a good edge. I like the way Ray Laconico does his convexed edges, I think we need to talk him into making a video for us.
I have knives that I take when I will be doing a lot of wood working, and I have others I bring when were not practicing making traps but will be doing a lot of cooking. It comes down to the right tool for the job for me. In the end, having a knife that is comfortable for long use, with a good edge, is all you need.
