TIME by Stephen Baxter,we send squids into space, they evolve faster than we,not very far into it yet, interesting concepts, mining asteroids for what we've depleted here.

Just started The Great Gatsby, largely, I fear, due to the fact that I was never required to read it during my school years and fear I may have missed out on something.

The local indie paper published a list of books that every college student should read. there was some on there I was interested in (Lolita for one, and some I thought were going to be crap (I know why the caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou). The Great Gatsby was one of 'em. It... was... okay. I remember there was one line that made me laugh out loud, but I can't remember what it is now (it was a couple years ago, but still well after college for me)

I ended up tracking them all down and reading (or trying to read, some were so painful, I couldn't get more than 50-100 pages in... The Sound and the Fury is about the worst book I've ever opened) all of them. I think there was ~25 on the list. Just for giggles, I sent a letter to the paper and thanked them for giving me a reason to read so many different and interesting styles... And they published it! One of the things I included was a brief re-cap of each book. I also made some suggestions, as they skipped some that I considered must-reads. I think the LoTR series wasn't listed... I can dig it out and post it if anyone's interested.

You gotta be in the right mindset for Faulkner. Try Absolam, Absolam! if you want some... interesting reading.

Hey folks, I'm looking for a recommendation for a really, really great book. I want something fun, intelligent, and gripping. Manly men, adventure, fighting to the death, overcoming insurmountable odds, survival, and ever so sweet revenge.

Dirty White Boys by Stephen Hunter:

Your requirements above are virtually a synopsis of the plot.

You can't lose, because I am so confident that you'll be gripped by this book that I will PayPal you the $7.99 it cost if you don't like it!

A Long Strange Trip, the inside history of the Grateful Dead.

Great book, more of a historical accounting of the bands years between 1965 and 1995.

You're just now getting to that? :D :p Some neat stories.

Heh. Yeah, I liked that one. Funny that you and tarsier should mention Stephen Hunter - I just happen to have picked up his novel 'Hot Springs' on Sunday and I'm loving it.

Thanks for the recommendations, folks!

This thread is resurrected.

My newest book happens to be another James Bond book (no, it's not the only series of books I read).

It's Silverfin, the first from the new "Young Bond Series."

So far, so good.
