An answer for the sheeple, and because I don't carry a spoon...

Oh, I don't know. I guess I'll go create one more "comments from sheeple" thread. The hundreds that went before didn't get the job done.

Texas natives are more likely to ask to see a large knife than question why you have it, unless you are in the the city.(Houston by me)
I live in the middle of nowhere and never have problems even carrying a large fixed blade

How large is large? But in general, I feel that you should carry a knife that you can comfortably use, and is appropriate for the environment and the kinds of uses likely to develop in that environment. I may like the short machetes, but I wouldn't consider carrying one in an urban location.

I get a kick out of carrying big knives here in Miami, benefits of a uniform. Usually is "just to clean my nails/toothpick", but one time I was at a target after shift was over and had a big breeden (10" blade) hanging from the belt. An employee is at my side making the usual questions and I play along, " yeah, u know, beheading people, hacking them to pieces, the usual " she just laughed and kept walking

There are some folks who will make a comment like that regardless of the size of knife you're using (outside of the kitchen, that is... .) I think that non-knife people are strangely fascinated by pocket knives and have an awkward time coming to terms with that fascination. I consider these comments as their way of an ice-breaker; maybe they hope to take a closer look and satisfy their curiosity? I mean, if they were truly concerned that I was a dangerous weirdo wielding a weapon, I suspect that they'd keep their wind-flaps shut and keep on truckin'--and I'd be explaining my knife-use to the police a few minutes later... :D

my sister asked me that. then, when she was trying to find a serviceable kitchen knife to slice up a whole pineapple I handed her my spyderco military. after her first slice cutting through the husk effortlessly her eyes got big and she said she knew why I carry it now.

The bigger the knife, the bigger the.......

Yes...that is exactly how that works. :D

Actually, I've never had people freak about the knife I have/use. I guess either: none of the people in the major metropolitan area I live in are sheeple; or I'm using my knife wrong.

A rule that I follow for my EDC is nothing over 4". Not that I feel uncomfortable carrying a bigger blade, I just don't like having a huge knife. I don't like the attention either.

"I hope it grows up." and grin, since usually, when I get that question, I'm carrying a USMC Short (5.25") (Max 5.5" in Texas). That sometimes leads them to ask other questions, which allows me to educate them a little on Texas knife laws. Unfortunately, I've found that a significant majority of folks don't even know limits exist.

I think some people have a problem controlling themselves and they don't understand that other humans don't have this problem, so they don't understand how another person can carry a large knife and not be a threat to society. I was watching a movie with my wife a few weeks ago ("Silver Linings Playbook") and it occurred to me that all of the characters were very confrontational, they would push any little argument to extreme. So I decided that some people by nature are confrontational and cannot control themselves in arguments.
