What are you guys using to send your knives/sheaths in? Anything decorative?

I read a post a while back where someone's girlfriend was making some very nice decorative cardboard boxes to send his knives and sheaths in.

Just curious what you guys use? If you do something decorative, could you post pictures?

Hobby Lobby has a nice selection of wooden boxes, for very cheap (especially with a 40% off coupon). I picked up a couple for my current order. I'm going to stain them, line them and create a divider to keep the knife and sheath separate. I thought about making my own, but as long as they keep this particular size in stock, it will work for now.

Here's a smaller box I picked up and finished for my first finished knife/letter opener ( ;) ).

The knife is the first one I made from scratch using a piece of junk steel out in our auto shop. Handled in walnut burl with stainless pins. I blunted the edge for it to be used as a letter opener. Gave it to my brother for Christmas.

The word 'dearthair' means brother in Irish Gaelic. I woodburned it into the top, stained with walnut stain and finished with a couple coats of Tru Oil buffed into the wood for a matte finish. Lined the inside with green felt.

I use zipper pouches from Tracy. The latest ones have elastic straps on the outside of the pouch to hold a sheath.

It does, and thank you very much.

BTW, is there a trick to sanding micarta handles like the last picture to get those even sequential rings from the center point out?

And, do you prefer to use hard spacers/liners or those vulcanized versions?

Wow...I just hijacked my own thread roflmao.

Haha...well it IS you thread! :) No real trick to it. I use the slack portion of the belt, but have done it that way for a while. Just have to sand, check, sand, check. The rings are made by the changing thickness of the handle. One thing about micarta is that the rings help you know if you're getting it even. As for the spacers, I actually prefer to use really thin G10, but there are only a few suppliers who have it. The vulcanized spacers will work but take a bit more careful prep to get really good adhesion, and some people have had issues with them swelling with high humidity environments.

I'm planning on making timber boxes for mine when I sell them. I'll use off cuts from work so all it'll cost is time.

Cool, post some pictures when you start making them!

Here's a design aspect question I have concerning the 2 boxes I'm about to start this morning.

The 2 knives I just completed both have Cocobolo handles and black dyed leather sheaths. I was going to stain the boxes a light walnut color (as the one above) to highlight the woodburning of my logo. The inside was going to be lined with a chocolate brown decorative felt.

Then I realized something...brown and black usually don't go together in terms of clothing, they probably won't look right in this instance either. So I put the brown felt back and grabbed the same design in red, and decided to stain the boxes black, with an unstained oval on the top that will have the woodburned logo.

I'm starting to second guess myself now, as I often do...lol

Would a knife with a large black sheath look more at home in a black box/red liner or a woodtone box w/ brown liner? The obvious real choice would be to go with a wood stained box and black liner, however the store is out of black. (doh!)

You guys have got to stop posting such NICE knives. Where is the crappy first knives section I can browse??????

Nathan, who is Tracy? I love those pouches you send your knives out in. Very nice touch. And your knife work is awesome.

I have so much to learn....

Aaron

+10000 Tracy's got all kinds of neat stuff and is a great guy. Knifemaker.ca and Alpha Knife Supply are a few more suppliers who frequent the boards.

The pouches from Tracy are from a supplier he located. He had the pouches made to his specs, and the price is really very fair. I picked up a small bundle of 'em a while back. As slow as I am making knives these days, they'll last me for a while :D.

The last shot is bad, my camera hates me lol.

I have recieved a knife from one maker who put it in pcv pipe, I thought that was a excellent Idea, but it was functional and not pretty.

Cool, post some pictures when you start making them!

With my knives approaching saleable quality I thought I'd start making timber boxes to mail them in. Nothing too fancy because they're not REALLY intended as show boxes. Just something to mail and store them in.

They're going to be a simple machine dove tailed box with a rebated lift off lid. Made out of whatever off cuts I collect from work. I also want to incorporate my makers mark on the lids some how. Maybe I can make a router jig to cut it out and then fill it with black bog or epoxy.

These first ones are just made out of tasmanian oak/victorian ash (pretty much the same thing). It's a pretty boring timber but I thought it would be better to use up the crap on my first attempts.

Heres the rest of the stash that I'll turn into boxes. American oak, iron bark, brush box, silky oak, tassy blackwood, euro beech, walnut, jarrah, red gum...
