What are you guys working on? Pics please!

I love the orange and black handle on that one chopper.. just that color contrast is nice to behold.

Wow, some of you guys are absolute MACHINES.

The second from the bottom now has slabs glued on and needs a bunch of handle shaping.

This is what I have right now. Most are custom orders. My KITH entry is on the end. When I get the sheath done for the War Cleaver I will post some pics in the gallery.

love looking at various phases of completion and this is a great TIP = Thread In Progress: :)

top left is 1/8" 1095 13 1/4" blade, others to the right are 1/4" 5160, various stages of completion some HT'd, 01, 1084,1095..

These threads are always fun. I'm currently working on a WSK/tracker type knife and it's giving me fits. All the flat-ground parts are just narrow enough that I dasn't use a 2" belt on them for fear of over-running the grinds. So I'm going back and forth between just filing them by hand or buckling down and building a 1" platen and splitting down some belts. Being the genius that I am  I think I'll just hand-file them and save the platen build for another day. Shop-time is scarce right now and in the short-term, I'm better served by just going forward with this particular knife.

I wish you luck on those James. I was making two of those almost a year ago, I decided to HT them myself even though I didnt have the proper equipment(:foot:STUPID:foot::mad:). I had the sheaths done, the handle scales done(not attached)...then I quenched them in boiling water(1095) even though I knew better and *chink*chink*chink*...both broke into 3 peices each. Oh well got what I deserved I guess.

I make knives for my personal pleasure. These are things that are in progress, though progress will slow way down with winter making it too cold for working in the garage, huh.., I mean shop!

I seem to work in batches rather than one knife at a time.

I'm done with mine, one of them I tossed in black nylon to see how it turned out... I cant wait to see the blades you guys posted finished and posted up after!

I wish you luck on those James.

Thank you Dave, they are challenging and fun to grind. I'm skipping the new platen for now, I need to get this baby ready. I will definitely be sending this one to Peters' for HT.

Some of you people need to find the magic of insulated coveralls!
they are just awesome. get filing with those on and you will be toasty in no time.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Smooth out the profile of the tang. Taper the tang and/or drill a bunch more holes in it to remove some weight from the handle. It's a darn good blade design, but it will feel like a brick in your hand by the time you put scales on it if you don't. Chamfer all holes to prevent stress risers. Roughen up the tang and insides of the scales before final glue-up to give a little extra area for the epoxy to grab onto. Drill for a thong hole; they don't cause any trouble if you decide not to use a thong, but they're handy if you do. Many a hunter has been cut badly by losing his knife inside a deer and fumbling around for it... with a thong around your wrist you would simply pull your hand out carefully and the knife would follow.

A small knife like that really needs very little steel in the tang to have the required strength; balance is hugely important. I prefer any knife, large or small, to have a balance point around where the index finger rests, if not forward from that, whenever possible.

Thanks for the input James, and Battle Creek, i agree with you on the handle, i hadnt finished it yet, im just not sure how much ill thin it out yet
Total length is about 7 1/2 inch with a blade of about 3 1/2 inch
The blade does drop into a point, i think the pic is on a bit of an angle, ill take a better one and add it in, along with the roughed out handle scetched on it
