What are you more passionate about: knives or the wilderness?

For me it's more about the knives.
I started liking the outdoors more when I began chopping it to bits!:D

It started with knives and now I only bring what I need for the moment, SAK, Mora, leatherman, laplander, whatever that is lightweight. Now the wilderness is the primary goal, to get away from everything. All those expensive factory made and customknives, rests in peace, in a box. What a waste!

.. people who meet me know that my one knife is a Mora. Would you belive it if i say that the only reason i actualy joined this forum is for the wilderness part of it... I find that there is so much knowledge on here about the wild that you guys are amazing. Oh yea i sort of like knifes too..

Sasha

Thanks for the honest answer. This actually explains alot to me.

See, I know that most of the regular population could care less about knives, and I accept that. But since joining this forum I have been suprised many times from the apparent lack of knife enthusiasm, (like all the a knife is JUST a tool remarks) ...this had me rather dumbfounded as to why would people go out of their way, pay money, and spend all their time on a forum dedicated to KNIVES, only to talk about how little knives mean to them or what knives shouldn't be! i.e.- knives are not weapons, toys, art, choppers, throwers ...etc. (sorry for the horrible run on sentence :p)

-But your statement about joining this forum for the wilderness and survival subforum, with knives only being an afterthought, makes a lot of the statements I've heard around here make sense.

Being in the wilderness is a pleasure to me and collecting knives is sometimes more of a painful addiction :D But I do enjoy both together or separately...

I'm passionate about adventure and exploration, and knives and the wilderness are keys to both-I like them equally :)

I like the open natural spaces. It does not have to be wilderness to satisfy my exploration, learning about nature, and the interaction of things in the wild. Knives just ride along as do guns except during hunting season.

I would say about the same but I dont have alot of time to spend in the woods anymore.

I'd say both. I've been on many camping/backpacking/hiking trips and hardly ever touched my knife for anything substantial and still enjoyed the hell out of the sights. I've also used my knives indoors for random tasks, cooking, opening mail, breaking down boxes and whittling without any thought to the outdoors. Also, I've spent a good deal of time simply holding and admiring the sheer functionality and beauty of some of my knives and am amazed by the way each maker designs, shapes, heat treats and finishes their blades. I also like to wonder how forging and heat treating evolved throughout history and how those happy accidents came about which led us to where we are now. I will say that I like having a knife or two on me, outdoors or in, makes me feel more comfortable. It's a constant companion that I'll keep for the rest of my days.

Wilderness for certain.

Just wondering for the guys who choose wilderness, what areas are they taking off to.

I'm mostly familiar with the Cabinet Wilderness, Bob Marshall, Absaroka-Beartooth (a lot), Selway-Bitteroot, and the Frank Church. Of these the Beartooth is the one that scares me the most as I've seen an ton of lighting storms there.

I love the Selway-Bitteroot Wilderness alot, and the Absarokas too. But this year my main summer trip is going to be the Wind River Range. I haven't been in them before, but I'm looking forward to it.

Definitely love the wilderness. Anything else I take along is merely a tool or convenience to make my stay in the wilderness more comfortable or help ensure my survival. Plus, there are different types of wilderness environments which require different tools, forest, mountains, lowlands, jungle, marsh, swamps, desert, arctic, etc. I can't say I 'love' knives; I like them and use them but, IMO, they've just another tool.

I am a complete blade-whore. I love the woods and my knives. It is ridiculous but I always overpack/overknife/overprep/overtrain for the experience. Most of all I have a great time. 99.9% of the time I don't need most of the gear I bring along - but I could care less. I'm the only person I know that would gain weight in a wilderness survival situation based on the way I pack. (this last part was true up until I joined this forum and found there are others like me out there - and some even crazier!)

They are a tool, yes; but they are also a symbol of what I love. That's why I'm not just satisfied with a Mora. I want knives that are aestically pleasing, beautiful, (to me), because they stand for and remind me of my passion. Maybe that is overly romantic, but its honest.

Beautifully said and exactly my sentiments! I love the wilderness and my knives remind me of being out there when I can't be out there.

G'day BryFry

The following quote has expressed my thoughts better than I ever could :thumbup:

It's the wilderness that I am passionate about,

...it is my escape and refuge, my recharge zone, my ancestrial home.....

..... As much as I like knives, they are just tools.

Wilderness.
If I had the choice of being stuck in Deeeetroyt with $100,000 in custom knives or stuck in a rainforest, without a knife? WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE.
I'll look for some sharp rocks and a super hard wood branch to whittle / sharpen up.
Wood machete..HMMMMM. There's a neat project !

Hmm ...stuck in the jungle with no knife ....sounds like hell to me.

$100,000 in knives sounds great.

Different strokes for different folks I guess! :)

I too like the feel and the craftmanship of a good knife and i would never say no to having a good knife. As i can and know how to appreciate one. Its just like having a good and better tool. Its just that there is always something else to spend the money on. But now give me a Mora or a bushman and my old pup back and i would be the most happy man roamning the outdoors. Heck you can keep the knife i just wish i had my old pup back. No woods would be lonely and no trail would be too long or too tough... yea that would be all i would need. Just looking at the pic of the CanadianTrailMan and i know what is the most important thing to have in the wilderness.. Sorry about the rant just started to miss my pup again.
