Yup, another "what do you carry?" thread!

So what did everyone, or will everyone be carrying this hunting season?

For me it will be the usual Dozier skinning knife, my Buxton "Pronghorn-ish" 5 inch custom in 52100, SAK, Supertool, Wegner Clip-it.

Oh, and a Winchester Model 70 .308 w/4x scope, to provide something to cut with my knives, and some ribs for the campfire!
:p

How 'bout you?

Jim

well If I get a chance this year (Lord willing!) it will be my Boker nicker knife!!! Last time it skinned a deer it didnt need resharpening!!!!! :D

what about "me"...;) :D

anybody in the maryland area need a freeloader to take along on their next trip?

I use my KA-BAR USMC for the big work, and believe it or not, a Gerber Gator for finer/skinning work. The Gator keeps a great edge for a "cheaper" knife. And of course my EDC, a CRKT Apache III for just about everything else. And a Remington 700 Light Tactical Rifle (Heavy Barrel) in .308 w/Leupold M3 Tactical scope, and a Bushnell Laser rangefinder.

I'm a spoiled deer hunter. I have access to great hunting with an overabundance of deer, so many that the landowner gets a special permit from the state for the removal of "nuisance" deer. I actually get to go hunting legally before the season officially opens through the use of these permits. Pity me... :D

I will take my pre-64 Model 94 Winchester 30-30, a slipjoint of some kind, and my Marbles Fieldcraft for field-dressing.

Elk:
.54 cal black powder
SRKW Camp Tramp SAK Soldier in pouch
SWRK Howling Rat
Spyderco Chinook
Boss Wolf Pup
Pruning Saw

Deer:
Remington 7400 in 30-06
Same knives.

Can you get out to WA by Friday night Dan?

Ed - LOL! :D:D

w/ black powder and all....

mighty tempting...

except for the long walk - :p

Went with a firend this year and we took his Savage .338 win mag. with a Bushnell scope. As for knives i took my PCKS Buck 110 w/BG-42 blade, MY custom 4" fix blade and my BK&T PM :D

I know this may sound boring with all the Doziers and other fancy knives on people's belts, but my Buck Vanguard with it's rubberized grip, and plain old nothing-fancy-about-it stainless blade hasn't let me down yet. It is razor sharp and the blade is the perfect size and shape IMHO for skinning a deer. Actually this is the knife that resides between the console and driver's seat of my car for SD while driving if for some odd reason I don't have my Glock 23 on.

Well, since it looks like all I'll be able to get in this year is one or two 1&1/2 day trips for pheasant/squirrel/rabbit. I haven't ever gone deer hunting, but with seeing all these gorgeous hunter/skinners here on BFC..... I may just be a convert!
My gear:
Filson game vest
Ted Williams model 12ga. from sears- made by Winchester I believe. This model has a variable choke, and is a pump. Anybody else have one of these?
Other possible gun choices: an ancient Remington .22 for the squirks, may bring the Savage O/U in .22mag and 20ga. (gotta do some sighting in first... can't hit diddly with it in the .22mag)
Knives... I'm going to bring a bunch to test their individual merits. The choices are; my Primos Platypus, my Dozier straight personal, a little D2 fixed blade made by Mosher, and a Cold Steel mini-pendleton, probably to give as a gift to my hunting buddy. I will also have my leatherman Wave just because. Of course the BK-9 always resides in the truck.

Hopefully, I won't be a "vegetarian" (old indian word for "bad-hunter") this year like I was last year.:(
Wish me luck/good huntin'
Mongo

I haven't gone deer hunting in a while, but the last seasons I did, I carried a Randall Made Model 25. If I was hunting the Carmel Valley, which has a lot of rolling hills dotted with pin oak, I carried a Weatherby in .270 Winchester. Hunting the tight, brush-choked box canyons in the Hollister Hills, I carried my open sighted Model 94 30-30.

This year will be first time hunting, so trying a few things out, will know what works best next time. But will have Scott FUlford neck knife, my Schrade Sharpfinger knockoff(original is still 900 miles away at parents house), and a Buck Goliath folding hunter. The schrade knockoff was made by me, for my own use, so I don't feel bad. :)

Oh, and guns will be Mossy 500 Persuader 12ga, Mosin Type 53 sporterized in scout config, and S&W Model 64 in shoulder holster for anything that needs final coup d'grace. What can I say, I like guns at least as much as I like knives. :)

A Grohmann stainless boat knife with a stag handle and overlap sheath accompanied by a ten dollar folding saw and a Winchester model 70 .270 Classic Sporter (walnut/blue) with a Leupold 3x9 Vari-X-II.

Looking for elk, mule and whitetail deer.. We've already been out last weekend and we happened to have a nice early Alberta blizzard. All we saw was a young bull moose and we called him in to 200 yards just to watch since we don't have any moose tags. But hey the season's just starting.....

Cheers.

Thanks for all the replies!
Pendentive, if you happen to be driving around the arctic circle, give me a shout, and I'll hook you up with some caribou!!!:D
This area is thick with moose too, but they are a little harder to get until the rivers freeze.

I really can't wait to get out there and fill up the freezer. I love the wild meat almost as much as I love giving new knives a workout.

I forgot to ask, what do you guys use for boning?
Last year I used my CS Recon scout a few times and it wasn't bad, if a bit bulky, and the Dozier is not long enough. My Dozier Elk hunter only gets used on moose, (silly, I know)so that is out of the question.
I have a Freidrich Dick Boning knife to try this year, but a higher end knife would be nice.

Any ideas?

Jim

...all these generous offers...:p

who knows, maybe I'll show up anyway...:D  :D

I grew up in the West, and eventually I'm headed for Alaska in the long run.

Dozier Yukon Pro Skinner (right hip), CRK Umfaan (left front pocket), SAK Classic (right front pocket), Rinaldi TTTKK (chuck box). All the bases are covered!

AJ

I'll be taking my (brushed stainless) .50AE Desert Eagle pistol, loaded-up with 325 grain JHP whoop-ass bullets. As for a knife, it'll be my Cold Steel Master Hunter for the field dressing honors.

For squirrel, a Ruger 10-22 with stainless barrel, Case brown bone trapper with CV steel and SAK Explorer.
Rabbit, the Case and SAK with a Mossberg 500 12 gauge (wish I had a 20).
And for deer, if I make it out, an old PSE elite compound bow, all black, 60% let-off and 65 lbs draw. Easton aluminum arrows with, well, I haven't decided which broad-heads to use yet. Never got a deer with my bow, but gun season is too short and crowded around here (should just use my truck as I see more deer along the roads than afield.) Same knives as above, and a Browning 4 inch featherlite drop point fixed blade.

gonna take my microtech SOCOM elite for EDC, my old gerber sheath knife for skinning (its so old i dont have a clue of the mod#) and my cammilus arc lite for gen'l cutting duties.

rifle this yr will be either:

*savage model 99 in .300 savage w/a redfield 4X scope

or

*remington 700 .264 win mag w/a redfield 3-9X variable, depending on conditions/etc

and a kahr P40 also

have already been doing some dove hunting, though i guess thats about over now
