what are your 10 picks for alone? very few understand that it's about fat aquisition.

Not sure, but I like the word under his name. Geesh, anyone that proud hasn't been tested by the bush. It humbles everyone.

Towards the end of each season of Alone, this Alewn ('Tranee') character comes along and preaches to the bladeforum community about how to live in a van down by the river...and kill bears with slingshots.

"Very few understand that it's about fat 'Aquisition'." Yeah, I guess that's why pemmican is in the permitted gear/ration list...

Oh wait, banned already? I'm looking forward to the next installment of Alewn towards the end of the 4th season of Alone - who knows what awesome tales he'll have to share with us all. One things for sure, this guy needs to call up Dos Equis, because he is by far the most interesting man in the world.

1. Knife
2. Saw
3. Pot
4. Ferro Rod
5. Sleeping Bag
6. Food (Jerky)
7. Food (Pemmican)
8. Food (Dried Lentils mix)
9. Food (Rice and Salt)
10. Fishing Line and Hooks

No Axe, burns up way to much energy. I watch even the women swinging a huge axe on a starvation diet and wonder why. Yes if I were living alone in the woods I would have much more than 10 items and yes I would have an axe. I would love to take many things but the items listed make since to me because food is such a high priority. look at the past shows, most fish caught with line and hook. No animals taken with bow or sling shot as far as I can remember. I would love a gill net but would rather have the food, would love 550 cord but would rather have the food and make cordage to pass the time away. I would love to have a dedicated water bottle but no space when food is so high on the list. So the pot is a multi use item.

I think it would be interesting to see, under what conditions the saw and ax were most efficient. I'm sure they both have their place, and I feel like the saw is what it is, where the ax would have a much wider curve based on technique /skill, So the ax would be better some of the time, but then far worse at others. interesting question though.

who said I didn't have a fire? one, they give you a flare, two, everyone, all the time, is not dropped off in a driving rain and friction fire aint that tough.

I'd love to see this guy start a friction fire on Vancouver island. LOL. If you're not from around here you may not realize how wet it is. My wife and I hiked through several inch thick, slick mud in the middle of a 90's heat wave in the middle of summer. "...ain't that tough." Ha! Maybe if you can find two sticks that don't disintegrate from rot when you pick them up. :D

While you are correct, you do realize the Troll was banned some time ago right?

I have an article about my choices in my website: The 10 gear mistakes of Alone contestants

I spent six months living in the wilderness with 1250 calories rations per day. We hunted, fished, gathered, trapped to complement our rations.
I don't understand why the contestants bring rations. They are so small that they aren't worth it. I also don't get why the bow is not popular.

-sleeping bag
-fishing kit
-hatchet
-ferro rod
-knife
-pot
-paracord
-bow and arrows
-shovel
-gill net

Didn't get chosen for the show, eh?

Yeah, but...he's baaaaaaaaack!

Didn't get chosen for the show, eh?

LOL i was thinking the same myself - this Alewn/Tranee character (now jpqs) clearly tried out for the show and didn't even make the 1st cut.

Nice 'website'...looks like the rantings of a disgruntled old man with way too much time on his hands, but put together with all the professionalism of a high school student using FrontPage in the late 90's. Round of applause.

Sorry when I posted here I went straight to the last page and didn't realize this thread was started by a troll. I don't want to get caught in this.

Read around a little more, get a feel for how the conversation goes. In general most of the trouble comes from the "I could do it easy" folks.

But to answer your questions, Archery is a difficult skill, and one that must be maintained. Its also energy vs. reward, active hunting vs. passive fishing, and its how those folks work that equation out.

Also while your accomplishment is impressive, half a meal a day, every day is relatively easy to manage from a psychological and physical standpoint. In that case all the forage is "bonus" food and is an even greater benefit. You also said "we" and that is not what the show is about, and in fact is a large part of what makes the show what it is.

Not to belittle your accomplishments, and you do carry the baggage of all the conversations that have come before, but there is little love for self proclaimed experts here.
As to your website and article, it is what it is, I disagree with a lot of it, rather most of it.

Here's a small reveal on our new "expert". He would choose the United Cutlery Kommando Tactical Shovel as part of their kit. Gecko45 would be proud.

Notice he also, on numerous occasions, insists he would take items that are not on the list of available choices. Talk about a pointless argument.

His bug out post at least encourages thoughtful planning as opposed to simply buying something off-the-shelf and being "prepared".

Firstly I would exclude any ranged weapon (like bows and slingshots), they have always demostrated to be useless in those environments.

You must have a completely different idea of what useless is than numerous aboriginal groups located all over the planet who for thousands of years have made a living, not just survived with "ranged". weapons.
Just because a few people on a TV show can't pull it of doesn't mean in any way that bows are useless.

Not a slingshot fan, but I don't think being able to launch a projectile accurately at a longer distance than just throwing it can be useless ever.

I wrote THOSE ENVIRONMENTS (Vancouver Island and Patagonia), where ranged weapons have proven to be totally useless.

Definitely the bow. Couple of those pigs and I'd be set. A tarp for sure as well as the biggest sleeping bag I could find. Fire steel. Fishing gear. Gill net. Pot. Knife... A real big one. Spend the rest on food rations
