I’m sure many of you have noticed there’s a lot of new participants here on the customs & handmades forum lately in light of some of the recent “Hot” discussions.

As I start quite a few threads here, I though it would be a good time to ask you regulars and the new or recent participants what type of threads you like best?

I enjoy starting threads and do so for multiple reasons including, to help keep the forum interesting and moving along, to share my collection and to introduce new knives/sheaths as I acquire them, to promote discussion that informs, educates, entertains and gets people thinking about issues or conditions affecting the custom knife industry.

So what type of threads do you enjoy most?

• The ones that depict beautiful knives and sheaths?

• The ones that teach/inform by promoting educational discussions between makers, collectors, dealers and enthusiast?

• The volatile ones that address the controversial subjects and issues facing this customs forums or the customs industry?

• The “best of” threads?

• The polls?

• The maker’s “in progress” threads.

• The reviews?

• The threads that depict and discuss engraving or other embellishments and/or processes.

• The threads that discuss knife materials.

• The threads that address and discuss steel type/makeup and performance.

• Threads that discuss knife construction and/or design?

• The ones that identify or discuss the latest trends in custom knives?

What specific threads you have particularly liked, found beneficial or interesting?

What type of threads would you like to see less of?

Kevin, I think that almost every thread you have started, I have enjoyed and in some way benefited from. I think some of the recent comments like "gee, let's just go back to looking at pretty knives" were more related to ending that series of threads, rather than any real commentary on just wanting to see images.

I find that in almost every case, your thread-questions cause good discussions to be had, and I for one want to thank you for them, and ask that you just continue as you have in the past.

Work in progress. Especially as someone knew to knives.

To be fair though a lot of the really nice custom knives picture threads have introduced me to various techniques and materials that can be used. I've learnt about damascus and also plain steel that is layered that looks like damascus. The list goes on. I've also seen knives that challenge my notion of what a knife is and can be.

Work in progress makes me want to buy a sander, some tools and try making some handles. Once I have the place for it I will most definitely try it.

To be perfectly honest, my favorite thread is the "Pictures That Make You Laugh Every Time" thread over in W & C:D But my SECOND favorite threads are the "work in progress" ones.

I like threads that teach, and threads that get good debates/dialogue going. Getting to see nice knives is great, but that's just the icing on the cake.

Any with me mentioned in them ;)

I'm not kidding.

Oh wait...

:p :p :p

Just kidding.

In all seriousness... I like the in-progress threads and the ones with pictures of cool knives.

The ones that baffle me are the ones where we talk about how we should think about thinking about possibly thinking about talking about knives ;)

I also appreciate the ones that discuss the goings-on in the craft enough that I get a little more learned in what everybody likes/dislikes :)

Anything I can learn from. I like the works in progress especially. I would like to see more knives you guys stop hording your collections. I do not enjoy the arguments but i have to admit at times they can be amuseing

Kevin,
I like all the threads you listed, the amount of information presented on this forum along with the characters presenting and responding makes it the top learning tool I've had the pleasure of being a part of.
I know I feel better informed about a lot of the aspects of custom knives than I would have without being here.

Some of the characters here, and some who aren't here at present:p make it a place I don't fail to visit multiple times every day for the solid and reliable information and the truly amazing images.
At least multiple times. :)

Doug

work in progress threads? :D

I agree with you about the "Pictures That Make You Laugh Every Time" thread.

I like most all of them and usually end up learning something new or at least get to see a different perspective. I visit mainly to see knives and threads with pictures of them would head my list.

i love:
1)all the knife in progress threads-it's a real treat to see makers such as jerry fisk...bailey bradshaw...nick wheeler and many others share how they come up with all of these creations

2)I love the show reviews alot because i can't go to many personally.....roger and steven come to mind immediately ....they are both great at taking pictues and making you feel like u were there

3)of course all the new knife and sheath threads....it never hurts to see fancy pics of shiney new steel....i just hope i get my new knife before paul long stops taking orders!

4)of course last but not least....any thread that mentions nick wheeler:eek:

I like looking at the pretty pictures.
Really.
I dislike the bickering.
If I had to pick a favorite style of thread it would be "in-progress".
But, there are so few, they are really interesting and novel. That could get old if there were 6 a week, every week.
I enjoy the discussions about marketing, values, the aftermarket and trends.
Even though I haven't sold a knife.
I enjoy 'getting to know' the knifemakers that do post here.

While I don't post all that often in this sub-forum, I read about all of it.

I would have to say in progress threads, with pics, and also that include the materials used etc.

it gives you ideas of how the knife should progress, what steps when, etc, and what materials look like in progress.

That said, the threads which stir the soul almost always offer some controversy. (I have set my CP to show all threads from the beginning, and it is interesting to sort the threads in this forum by views or replies. Bladeandbarrel's 'Blade Show-a LOT of Overpriced Customs' is the reigning king.)

Of course each of the above examples will be interesting. Yes, it's a two-dimensional medium, and so photographs and words are the only input.

Both limited in their ability to convey the truest message, and yet so powerful.

A thread takes on the power of a good drama or novel. Once it starts and lures us in we respond. At that point we 'own' a piece of it.

My favorite threads are usually ones where I approach with a differing point of view and then leave with another--always because of another member's input. Sometimes it takes a while, but I 'get it'.

Thanks for all you do.

Coop (Who NEVER misses the latest PTMYLETYST thread!) ;)

Thanks Bob I really appreciate that. I live in the country and have a bit of a drive to the office so that's often when I come up with the ideas. I will try to keep posting them as long as you guys seem to show interest.

The recent threads regarding the critiquing of knives did get tiresome, however I believe our forum will benefit as a result of them.

thanks again Bob.

Now that's a good answer. :D

Any thread that had Nick in a tight t-shirt all sweaty in front of his forge. (Insert hysterical little gay choreographer or hairdresser squeal here):D

But seriously...the show, hammer in, etc report and review threads are also very imformative and entertaining.

In all seriousness, I enjoy looking at the craftsmanship and the beauty of knives, Some of my favorite threads are over in traditional, "OLD KNIVES" and "Custom Slip-Joints" I collect, never had the joy of making a knife, but really respect those that do. I do not like controversy nor rudeness as some threads turn downhill and go from there. I hope to make it to Blade and meet some of the nicest guys on the forum. Keep the photos coming and I'll be back.

The ones I like the most; (sorry, I cut and pasted to make it easier:))

• The ones that depict beautiful knives and sheaths

• The ones that teach/inform by promoting educational discussions between makers, collectors, dealers and enthusiast

• The “best of” threads

• The maker’s “in progress” threads.

As for the threads I found most interesting, believe it or not, I am a big fan of all the critique oriented threads. A lot of people provided feedback and represented their respective perspectives honestly. There was a lot of dialogue between some of the best makers, top tier dealers and entrepreneurs, high end collectors, and guys like me. It was a great string of dialogue and should somehow be preserved. How many times have so many of the elite in the handmade cutlery industry had input into such a, at times, elemental discussion.
Pure Gold, that.

I don't really find any particular threads objectionable, except maybe the requests for resale value of knives and no picture. Are you kidding me?:barf:

I'm also not a big fan of obituaries, but who is? It's good that they're in here when someone in this community passes on.

Other than that, in the words of one of my favorite knifemakers, 'it's all good'.
