What are your knife-related "pet peeves"?

I hate all the functional thing brought up already like dull edges, loose pivots and off centre blades. One other thing I cant stand is when knives look bad when they're closed, with stuff sticking out everywhere. An example is the Para Military. Seems to only be halfway engineered. I'm glag they fixed it on the Para II.

I also dont like lanyard holes on knives with an open back design or that are tip down only. Just seems kind of pointless.

1. Coatings on blades.:thumbdn:

2. People who freak out when they see that I have an ordinary knife on me.:thumbdn:

I was once called "Norman Bates" from the movie Psycho when I used a Case Peanut (YES, A PEANUT!!!!) to open a lunch package in the break room. Nevermind the giant chef's knife on the countertop . . .

So many truisms here! One salient point has escaped - satisfaction! It's innocuous to the knife's function. No set quantitative values to compare, either. You just don't feel 'satisfied' with your new purchase. The grind is even - the razor-edge raises hair - the scales fit perfectly. You just don't feel, no matter the cost, the same sense of pride - happiness - satisfaction - which other, often far less expensive knives delivered. You keep it - because you are a knife-hoarder/glutton - and plan your 'next' victim's purchase. Searching for the one that will make you happy...

It really bugs me when someone points out that a topic has been covered before. Just about every single topic here has been discussed before at some point. So I guess we should never reply to threads anymore and instead tell someone it has been done and post links or a LMGTFY link? That should be real fun.

If you don't like a thread topic, why do people feel the need to make a comment about it? Just go on to the next thread.

I don't like knives that have a pivot that won't open smooth and easily. Some knives even if you loosen them up until they have blade play just aren't smooth.

I don't like blades that hit or almost hit the liners. I don't mind if it is a little off center, but way off is annoying.

I don't mind a dull knife because I will sharpen it to my liking anyways. A off center grind I don't like though.

I don't like tip down only.

I don't like cheap steel or a bad heat treat that won't hold an edge well.

I don't like aluminum or stainless handle scales. I'm not real big on titanium either but will still buy them if it is an outstanding design.

I don't really like liner or frame locks. I think there are much better lock designs and would rather have a better lock. There occasionally is a knife that I like enough to over look this like the Gayle Bradley and the Volt. I would have much rather they have a ball bearing/ compression lock for the GB or the Hawk lock on the Volt.

Blade coatings of any kind are awful. The first time you use the knife, the coating gets scratched and looks ugly. If you remove the blade coating, you also remove the maker's logo, steel type, production number, etc. They're also completely unnecessary, unless you live on a boat (even then you could get H2 or N390, etc.). People try to sell them as "tactical," (no reflections), but unless you're a SEAL you don't need it. I'll get flamed for this, but when was the last time you were asked to assassinate someone at night?

My pet peeve is knives where the blade tip is barely covered when in the closed position.

I like when the tip is safely buried in the handle, which also provides 'room' for sharpening wear, and I like it even better when the handle design makes this a guarantee, such as Spyderco PPT, Dragonfly, Lum Chinese etc.

Design:
Chisel grounds.
Tanto's.
I've even got a chisel ground tanto folder.

Production flaws:
Asymetric bevels.
Asymetric exposure of the core metal in laminated blades.
That Fallkniven P folder that was not too sharp out of the box.
Blade way off centre (Vantage Pro)

People:
My coworker M. who keeps wristflicking the 'poor men's sebenza' I sold him. I know it is his knife now but still ache a little when I hear the blade crashing into the stop pin every 5 seconds. Just thumbflicking it open is just as good a stress reliever.
My coworker G. who is a great guy but keeps on calling my Delica (or even smaller blades) "The Sword". OK I have to admit it is in good humour as he carries a fake 110 to peel his afternoon orange.
My dear coworker G. who carried an incredibly blunt fake 110 with a broken tip. Might only be used for oranges and such. A positive side is that he asked me to sharpen it. I gladly obliged.
My dear mother in law who wanted to give me a handful of used kitchen knives of a quality that was much lower than the stuff in my already bulging kitchen drawers. Trying not to hurt her feelings refusing to take the stuff home was difficult.

Exposed tangs when the knife is closed
Slick G-10
Inaccessible liners or framelocks
Crazy clips
Thin pivots that cause bladeplay

Here's one. On a Filipino knife forum there's a guy who every once in a while gives updates on another new "incident" of lock failure of the knockoffs that he uses. But he never seems to stop carrying knockoffs.
