I'm considering getting my first multi tool in stead of another knife soon. I really like teh CHarge TTi. The S30V blade is a real draw. How does it perform compared to other multi tools for EDC purposes?

I think it all boils down to whether you think the S30V is worth the price increase over the Wave. Because thats pretty much the only difference. You are paying in the range of $106 - $119 for the TTi, versus $60 or so for the Wave. I don't think that S30V is worth that much, but thats just me.

The S30V will give somewhat of an increase in performance (stay sharp longer, basically) than the 420 HC in the Wave. A hardcore user might find that its worth the price premium, and others not so much. Only you can decide that for yourself.

I use my wave everyday and i use it hard. I gotten resharpen it just like any other knife and have no qualms about that, especially since i didnt pay over $100 for it. The tti looks cool, and is great if your going to be working by salt water, but for a hard use multi tool, s30v doesnt appeal to me since i beat the crap out of it anyway

I have one and think it is a great multi. But,it does'nt get much belt time due to weight.I'd rather edc my Blast or my Spirit X.

If you really like it, no reason you should not get it.
Performs quite well. Very solid MT.

Beside the blade steel, the other difference is the Titanium handles.

Both of which explain the higher price. Not saying its needed, but many find those things a plus.

Certainly nothing wrong with a Wave, but if you really like the TTi why not get what you really want.

I have one and love it.

It's in my EDC bag every day and I take it with me when mountain biking.

i have used my wave countless times. and 1 complaint i have about it is that the handles are too smooth. and have pinched myself because of that while using the pliers.
the charge's handles are gripier.
i gave away my SOG powerlock, because i prefer the wave more. i like that the knife, saw, serrated knife, and file open without having to open the pliers.
but if i lost my wave, or needed a new full sized multi-tool. the charge is what i would get. i only need the s30v, but i wouldnt mind having it.

I bought my Charge at a pawn shop. before that I have a Kick and Surge. The Charge is the only one i carry now.

IMO, it depents on if you are gonna be using the tool as your main knife or not. If you are, and you are not so good at sharpening, the Charge is what you will want. If it will be your main set of EDC tools, but not your main blade, the Wave is a better option, as the tool components (saw, file, scissors, screwdrivers etc) are the exact same on both, but you can get the Wave for half the price, with a downgrade of non-essential components.
And- if you are used to Buck's 420hc steel, Leatherman's 420hc (on the wave) is a negligable bit softer, still a good basic steel. If you are worried about grip on the Wave handles, skateboard tape is the answer.
Good luck with your purchase.

The only reason I have Charge TTi is that while I was in the market, a really good deal on one came up at almost the same $ as the Wave I was shopping for. Although for the money I couldn't turn it down, the Charge was actually my second choice because of concern about the crimper on the pliers jaws. It turned out not to be an issue, though.

After an initial get-acquainted period, the TTi became my favorite multi-tool and go-to when I expect the probability of needing tools, which is most days. It's my hands down "if I could have only one" choice (although I am, fortunately, not in that position :) .) It rides all but unnoticed in its nylon belt sheath containing the TTi, bit extender and Fenix EO1 flashlight. Perfect.

There are a few nice things about the Charge compared to the Wave, although these benefits are minor. The Ti handles are easier on the hand and less likely to slip when wet. What Leatherman describes as a cutting hook on back of the Ti serrated blade is very handy for opening packages, and S30v does hold an edge longer than the 420HC, but unless you use the PE blade all day every day (I don't), a few more sessions on the stones over time is no biggie. Functionally, the 2 models are identical.

Given a choice with money no object, I would go with the Charge. It's just that much more elegant and useful. If function is your first priority, however, you can save money with the Wave, but here's another way of looking at it: This is not the kind of thing you buy and discard every month or so, but something to have for a long time. How much is the money saved going to matter to you, say, 3 years from now? A dinner and a movie? ;)
