Recommendation? What are your thoughts on Origin Blade Maker Grinder Chasis?

You should looks at the iron creek forge diy grinder. You'll have to buy a motor still but it bolts right on the chassis. I think it's about 800 delivered but its a lot better machine. Very sturdy and run vertical and horizontal.
I have one of these and can confirm they are great. You can find him on FB. I should also mention I started out on an OBM. Not bad but for the extra $200-300 I would go with some of the ones already mentioned.

I've been using one for over 5 years, no major complaints

One thing that stick out as a negative on the OBM for me; That bent platen is an issue. There was a guy trying to mod his just a few weeks ago because you can't get equal plunge cuts with it.

I'll agree. You can't use a file guide for the plunges on the side with the arm without shimming out the platen about 3/4".

Yeah I had to put a 3/4 thick piece of aluminum behind the platen. There were quit a few mods I had to make on the OBM to suite my needs

For budget grinder kadmaskreations srg1.5 is nice i got one few months ago and very happy with it. Also look at reeder and as mentioned ameribrade

I just purchased an OBM Dominator. I'd extremely high hopes for it. It is incredibly well built. But it does have some design flaws. I ended up returning it and causing myself to lose $450 between shipping and restocking fees 😡

If you would, can you elaborate on what the" design flaw" issues were and specifically why you returned it? That would help others in making decisions.

Not directed at jll346's post , or the OBM, but a general comment:
People regularly make comments about products with no explanation. You read the reviews on a product on Amazon or other places and people write, "Worst I ever used", doesn't do the job", or Didn't work", but don't say what the problem was. Things like "Doesn't track properly", "handle broke on second use", Won't go into reverse", "Not enough power", No instructions", etc. are more helpful.

Looks like this thread is somewhat dated, hopefully I’m not necroposting as the topic is relevant. I have had my Origins Mini Diktator for over a year now and thought I’d give an unbiased review.
The Mini Diktator is a bolt together model that came pre-assembled with the exception of the offset direct drive plate to save space in the box it shipped in. What little assembly was required took very little time. Installing the drive wheel and tracking wheel took a bit longer as there was little input or direction in the instructions to fine tune for minimal belt wobble. I did find videos online that assisted with this however.
For me this grinder is primarily used to finish a knife at slower speeds. I use a 2x48 and a 2x42” grinder for the brunt of the work at lower grits (on up to 120 grit), then I switch over to the Mini Diktator for 220 grit and higher. At lower speeds, there is some belt wobble, but it does not effect my intended use, but may be bothersome to others (I imagine it would not be difficult to get that out if I needed to). At higher speeds, the wobble disappears completely and the unit runs as smoothly as my KMG Classic did (and the Classic was one of the better units).
As others stated above the bent platen makes working with a file guide difficult. With just a little over a year into this unit, I noticed today that the top idler wheel gets hot at higher speeds, and will need replacing, or new bearings installed. I have not used a contact wheel on this unit as yet, but am looking for a decent 10” wheel to add to the set up. All in all, it has been a decent $379. Investment that I don’t regret. Having said that, if there is a “next” 2x72 grinder for me, I’ll more than likely try a Reeder.

I'm a relatively new knife maker with an OBM. The set up was a bit intimidating for me, but after using it a bit (I'd been using a HF 1x30), I got used to its minor oddities, I started to crank out some nice blades. I agree the bent platen attachment was an impediment , but like most things I found ways around it. I like the 2 tool arm availability, and the standard 1.5" tool arms as well. The VFD is great and the motor has been more than enough for me. For the last two years it's been a great tool. Doing it again would I buy OBM? Maybe...It was a good deal for the money at the time and it's been mechanically trouble free. I'd like the ability to go horizontal, but I'm sticking with this grinder for the time being. I like the extras they've put out, waterfall platen, small wheel attachment...they've all helped me.

I have the yellow spot welded version of the OBM I’ve had about 5 years now. I haven’t had any issues with it at all. I did buy my own 2HP motor and vfd and hooked it up myself. If you have the skills knowledge to do more work yourself it’s a good buy I think. One thing I wish though is I would have gotten one where the motor attaches to the frame and has the vertical/horizontal swiveling built it. My next grinder will be like that and keep the flat platter on it and this OBM grinder will keep the wheels on it.
