Moving to General, since it's gone in that direction already.

Would ask that you didn't Frank as I was in the process of compiling my post whilst that was going on and I don't think it was Hickory 'n' Steel's intention to go in that direction. Will add text when status of thread is confirmed.

Anyway, as I was going to say. A big factor behind my choice of EDC knives are the U.K. knife laws (no more than a 3 inch non-locking blade), so I've found these three Rough Riders fit the bill. The small work knife is a great all purpose, single blade tool. The small stockman also a great little knife with a better choice of blades, if slightly small for bigger jobs at work. The whittler gives me the best of both worlds, with a strong main blade and a nice arrangement of small ones, and has been getting a lot of pocket time recently for these reasons. Previous to these I used my Vic Farmer or my Gak, both great knives for everyday use. The Farmer has found a permanent home in my fishing tackle box and the Gak I must start using again, great knife. Weekends it's my small Case Peanut or my little Turner two blade equal end pen... smart, discreet and useful.

#5 buck 110, an American Classic, and older version some of the new ones are not built as good as they used to be
#4 leatherman kick, light and easy to carry with a knife and pliers
#3 benchmade 585 or 580, like the shape and ergonomics and just a good overall blade
#2 buck 112, had a hard time thinking of one and this is just basically a lighter weight 110 in a way, I KNOW THE DIFFERENCES
#1 definitely the EKT companion, so many options how to carry and just an amazing knife overall, I love it! I even preorder the second gen so I have both!
Wilder card has to go to the benchmade 940, just a classy knife that can be worn to something formal and a great design.

In no particular order ...
Buck 110 or Schrade 7OT **
Large stockman **
Four blade scout/camp knife **
Canoe
Standard size two blade Barlow
Bonus: Large sunfish.

** = My normal EDC trio

This Changes by the minute....In no Particular order:

CRK Insingo

Strider SMF

El Patron (Gen2 3V)

MKT Praetorian T

Andy Fity Angel Wing Flipper

I meant this to be for traditional, so the wild card didn't mean a non traditional ( mine just happened to be one )

Strider LD
Cattaraugus225q
Marfione custom Socom Alpha
Swamp Rat Jackmandu

And this Olamic Terzuola M30... which is out for a REK regrind.

  • Victorinox Cadet - lots of horsepower for size and value
  • GEC #73 - great size and blade shape
  • Case Med Stockman - 1095 traditional greatness
  • Benchmade 940 - lots of knife for easy pocket carry
  • Benchmade 2551 - auto, length/foot print is very similar to 940, thin full flat grind drop point is very useful
  • wild card = Spyderco Paramilitary 2 - overlaps the Benchmades. I don't carry this one as much mainly due to size - the other ones carry easier (lighter weight, smaller foot print)

Qualifier, by "useful blade shape" I mean that I find these blade shapes to be good at any task. By shape I'm including thickness and grind. Some shapes I find to be a trade off - very good for certain tasks, but not as good for others.

The relatively thin, full flat grind on GEC#73 and BM2551 are my favorite blade shapes for all around usefulness. There are no trade offs with exception of heavy prying or a tactical need. Personally I don't consider a folding knife for either of the latter. The 2551 could be considered for tactical use - for me it is just a great sized, highly functional folder.

The Vic Cadet is almost always with me. Even when I'm carrying one of the others. You don't even know its in your pocket. The tools are highly functional. The blade size great. Hard to beat the value/quality/design. You won't feel sick if you lose it.

I'm almost 50/50 traditional and modern. My true love is for traditional knives, but I can't pass on highly functional modern knives.

I'll play.

#1 is the Leatherman Micra. It's always in my pocket.

#2 is the Opinel #9 Inox. Easily my most carried knife. I agree 100% on the blade shape issue.. I just prefer mine a tick longer than the GEC 73.

#3 (at this point in time) is the Case Large Sodbuster. It doesn't fill my hand like the Opinel does but it's beautiful and easy to carry.

One thing I value... no... treasure about both of these knives is how well they handle food prep and how "friendly" they are. I use these around non-knife people like all the time and they cause zero stir. That's a real win in my book. I use and enjoy these knives in places and situations where other knives would cause an issue.

#4 is the Schrade 6OT. I said that wrong... I meant to say the real Schrade, not the hollow shell of a name Schrade. But I digress. Somebody please send a memo to Buck and tell them to add a bare head option to their custom shop. Until then, the 6OT gets the nod when I feel in the mood for a big ol' lock back. It's just so much lighter and easier to carry than a 110. C'mon Buck...

#5 isn't pictured. It's a used Leatherman Juice CS4 that I got. Carries in my EDC bag easily and when needed, rides in my watch pocket. It's replaced my Blast for EDC bag carry. I'll get pictures at some point.

WILD CARD - The Buck Slimline (Walmart's variant of the Spitfire.)

In terms of blade shape, it fill the hole between the Buck 500 Duke (too small) and the Schrade 51OT (too big). And as a plus, it has a visual homage to the 112, which is the most beautiful production bricks, er, knives ever made.

Thanks for looking.

Good adds by all.

Dr-Mabuse - get on in here. Don't stay on the porch.

Charlie Mike - I like the lighter loops on your sheaths. Anyone can use a fire steel. It takes the wisdom of a man to carry a Bic. I like it! That M30 is bad ass!

Pinnah - I like your setup. I've yet to try the Opinels. They have a great rep.

Lot's of good posts. I'm always curious to see what other people like to carry. You gotta love knife culture - what you carry in your pocket or on your belt says a lot.

I call that sheath the Urban Survivalist rig. I make one for every fixed blade I carry. Contains everything necessary for city survival.

My top 5.
1) (RFP) ZT 0200 - I pushed it out of my pocket to explore some "fancy" knives...but it found its way back, and hasn't left since.
2) (LFP) GEC 92 Talon
3) (LFP) GEC 15 (single blade)
4) (LFP) GEC 47 Viper
5) (RRP) bacustom knives EDC utility
*) (LFP) Military? I'm not sure this one belongs here, as it has fallen out of grace after somehow cutting up the pocket of a favorite pair of pants. It isn't relegated to the shelf, yet; but if that happens again, it may be.

Delica
Stryker (pre axis)
Leatherman wave
Schrade 8ot
Frontier aa-41
Wildcard I occasionally carry my fixed blade for the day but it's mostly a half day carry on hikes
