What back-up blade do you carry?

The Chef, that was a nasty situation! I often wonder how best to defend yourself from aggressive dog-attack, anybody care to add their experience? How best to pacify or scare off an aggressive dog? No flamethrower or fire-arms suggestions, we're in a street situation say.

There is a product called Muzzle, a pepper spray made for dogs and other animals (works on the two legged kind too). Regular pepper spray doesn't do much to an attacking dog. Muzzle when used on a two legged animal causes severe burns to the skin.

A couple of winters back our welsh corgi was attacked by a pit bull. Since I'm 50% disabled from an old service injury I use a cane, as my right ankle is not real realiable. I don't like old fogy canes, so I use an Irish blackthorn walking stick for street use, and a hornbeam hiking staff in the woods. The blackthorn is a pretty thick sturdy stick, and the staff is about mid rib high and also pretty heavy duty.

When the off the leash pit attacked our leashed corgi in a public park, it happened so fast you don't have time for alot of planning of action. I just did a good overhead swing down on the pit bulls head like I had a sledge hammer. The root ball handle of the blackthorn caved in the pit bulls skull, killing it on the spot. I had to defend myself from the young punk owner who was in a fury over me hitting his dog while it chewed on our corgi. By the time the police got there and straitend everything out, he was given a ticket for having a vicious dog off the leash, and third degree mistomeaner assault on me, then transported to the hospital. He later tried to sue me over the death of his dog, but the judge threw the case out of court and ordered him to pay the vet bill for the stiches in our dogs shoulder.

Against any kind of dog, a stout stick is great. Take out the head, and the problem is over. Where I live, the state of Maryland, there is no way I can carry a gun, so I carry a very stout walking stick. No law against it. If anyone asks, just tell them you have a problem with arthritus, or you twisted you ankle playing volley ball, or something. Plus the stick is always already in your hand.

That is survival stuff--- or did you mean EDC?

I was thinking more along the lines of survival back-up. While the Snitch is small, it is a great cutting blade. I feel more comfortable having it should I lose my primary. I also have a back-up way to make fire attached.

On a daily basis, I carry a SAK Rambler for most cutting chores. My back-up is one of several tactical folders. Though lately, I've been favoring my recently aquired Emerson Mini-Commander with the Wave feature for bigger chores.

For Survival - My SOG Power Lock multi-tool, my SAK Huntsman, my Benchmade Rant Bowie, and USMC Ka-Bar knife with kraton handle.

Out in the woods, I carry more than 1 back-up to my Ka-Bar.

An impressive defence! Nice work and thanks for the tip about the skull:thumbup:

Generally I like dogs but I've had a couple of nasty run-ins with some of them and always in parks. are you SURE that cane of yours isn't a sword-stick:D

No, no blade anywhere, too illeagal here. Just plain old stout piece of wood. Its amazing what a nice sturdy piece of Irish blackthorn, hickory, American hornbeam, can do, damage wise.

I too love dogs, and grew up with them. But I have zero tollerance for the jerks who go get a breed of dog that fights other dogs, then lets them off the leash in public and let them attack others dogs. If they think our welsh corgi is a "wussy" dog like the one idiot said, then thats thier opinion. But I'm going to defend that corgi just like I would any other member of my family against thier big bad pit bull, even if I have to kill thier pit bull to do it. I regret my actions I have to take agaist the dog, but I have no regrets for the injury to the owner if he pushes it.

You are completely right, letting aggressive dogs off lead in public is like loosing off firearms in inappropriate & dangerous places, and the perpetrator must face the consequences.

back to the topic ;)
this is my backup knife since a few days.

 I wholeheartedly support the stick! I carry one on walks now, if I had it then I would have felt a whol lot more secure being further out of harms way.

Haven't had to use it but Muzzle spray is made for dog attacks. Similar to pepper spray but a lot stronger. I hear regular pepper spray doesn't work on dogs.
