what belt and in what order do you use them to get the smallest of lines.

i just painted my kmg grinder, and all i can do is look at it.
so i need to know what to buy, and not cheap one's , i want one's that will last.
so tell me what you use and in what order, because what i've seen you guys know what your doing.

When I purchased belts I bought them from Pop's Knife Supply. Great service and good prices.

I bought 40-60-80 cubitron

then some 120-150-220-320 klingspor

but blaze belts are apparently pretty good and i want some

I have been using the new norton Blaze, they only go up to 120 grit but I am always amazed at how long I can use them. I use 2 x 72 but depends on your machine unless you mean grit, many start a coarse a 32 grit, I start with 60 (takes longer to really mess up) then go to 80 then 120 .. 220 .. 320.. 80-90 percent of the work is done with the 60 grit. I have given up on finer belts since there seem to be alot of scratches that have to be hand sanded. Probably due to contamination of the belts in my shop.

Give tracy mickley at usaknifemakers a call. he's a thouroughly nice guy and provides great service i just ordered some belts for my kmg clone which tracy advised me on the best to use. I'm sure he'd be only too happy to help.

Here's the link for Tracy Mickley's supply, http://www.usaknifemaker.com/store/index.php , he's up the road from you in Minnesota.
Tracy carries Norton and Klingspor, both premium quality belts (the other big name is 3M). I personally use the Norton Blaze belts in 60 and 120 grit, Norton Norax in A65, A45,and A16 I have also recently enjoyed using 3M Trizact CF ("Gators") in A45 and A30.
Though I don't have any currently, the "yellow" 3M ceramic belts kick arse, too.

Everyone comes up with their own personal belt sequence, so you'll get a hundred different answers from a hundred knifemakers.

I personally recdommend getting one in each grit (36 may be too coarse for your tastes, they're like rocks glued on cloth) until you see what works best for you. You'll use 'em all eventually, and try every new wonder-belt that comes along, like most of us do. :)

Correct, Vern. They are progressively finer grit. One thing to note: the first two grits (80, 120) you can get wet. The others (Norax) have to stay dry.
