What blades are in your backpacking kit??

While ultra light weenies will have a heart attack, I never go outdoors without a 10 inch chopper or a hatchet in my bag. Its a tool that'll quickly pay for itself should you ever need it.

First of all, that's a handsome knife. And I agree, experience with the gear you'll be using and actually carrying it when you're out hunting, hiking, etc is very important. That being said I find that when I'm backpacking I can usually afford to carry a folder and small multitool since I'm carrying various other gear items like a tent, tarp, water filter, cordage, extra food, as well as a two or three ways of starting a fire (matches, lighter, ferro rod). On longer day hikes when I carry less gear I'll carry something more substantial like a Mora 2000. But like you said I just enjoy carrying my knife (an Izula in my case). Oh and once you break open that Bahco I'd like to hear your thoughts on it!

And Pinnah, I actually carried a Leatherman Squirt too for awhile but downsized to the Style PS (mostly for weight and the carabiner attachment). Loved the old PS4 though, definitely could have made a few trips only carrying it!

Thanks, I'm very happy with that knife. That is a good point (having much of what you need with you already). Where I differ is that I look forward to the opportunities to practice with my gear as I don't get a ton of chances to get out in the woods these days. Even if some of it is unnecessary, getting to go out and dick around in the woods with a big knife is half the fun for me.

I have a Evans Knife and tool stashed in my pack, Also I mostly carry a Kershaw Knockout. There is a 14 mile bike trail near my house I do a lot of mountain biking on it and general hiking as well. On my hikes I mostly just carry a Camelback water bladder, trail snacks and lunch for the day.

I'm one of the weight weenies. Leatherman PST and a rat1, but will be swapping the rat for a Mora or other small fixed blade.

Most of my hiking these days are day hikes with the occasional one possibly two night deal. I am not inclined to hike other than short distances (~5 miles) when the temps are above 90 degrees. I seldom need any knife other than my SAK. But I typically carry a SAK, medium fixed blade (Kabar Becker BK-15, Blackjack 125, Dozier Pro Guide). Beginning this year I usually have a Leatherman Squirt PS4 on my key ring. The fixed blade changes a fair amount, but I am pretty comfortable with the above choices. Depending on the situation, I may add a folding saw. Just messing around in the woods, I may have a machete with me.

I live in Colorado and we spend a lot of time in the mountains backpacking, camping and hiking. So what I take with me depends on the type of trip I am going on and if there are others going with me. I do however always have a multi tool, usually a Leatherman Juice, or a SAK, like a Victorinox Hiker, and a larger folding knife like the Spyderco Endura or ESEE Avispa. If we are in an area where we can have a fire I like to take a larger fixed blade with me if I can stand the extra weight. I like the Buck Hoodlum but there are other larger fixed blades that do just as well. Basically something that will chop and baton. If it is a multi day trip with long days I will sack the large fixed blade even if fires are allowed. If you are going with a large group it is easier to bring more toys because you can share the load. You would only need one large knife for a group.

I always have a Victorinox Pioneer/Harvester a 4" fixed blade, (the last 2 years its usually a Survive Knives GSO-4 in M390) and either a GSO-10, Folding, saw or GB SFA depending on the area (Oregon or Utah) Something to split with is a must on some of the hikes/camping I've done in Oregon when ALL the wood is soaked several inches deep.

Currently in my pack is SAK cadet and an esse izula. I only do day hikes right now (5-10 miles) as I am trying to get into shape. I mostly do my woods wandering at established parks with a fair amount of foot traffic (even off the beaten path). I'm not worried at all about being lost/stranded in the woods. Plenty of creeks to follow and roads to run into, or people to come across.

I always have some type of edc folder on my person and the cadet in the pack. I don't need a fixed blade at all, but almost carry one anyways. I mostly rotate between my izula, bk 14, mora companion or classic, and I recently got an enzo trapper that I have yet to put through its paces.

That is the best reason ever.
I have crushed vertibra in the lower back from my army days, so when trekking I go ultra light.
However, it hasn't stopped me putting together a 5 day dicking about in the woods pack which comes in a tad under 50lbs with rations:

I have over the years an armoury of cutting tools, several examples for each category, all because its part of the hobby. Some are my favourite reach for, some weren't quite as successful. Its fun.
For forestry work and building projects then its power tools and heavy machinery. But thats work.

All this compliments my hunting and fishing gear. Any excuse to be out in the woods. At the end of the day "you pack it, you carry it".

Greenjacket, that's one heck of a nice dicking about rig (which is how I'll be referring to my camping gear from now on).

There is a GB Small Forest Axe, Titanium Special Forces Spade, Silky Saw, Skrama on the pack. Then I have my SAK Huntsman in my pocket and Letherman Charge TTI and Survive Knives GSO on my belt.
Do you think thats a bit OTT?

Its a hobby. Sadly I could exchange every one for something different again. How sad is that?

If it's just a day trip, I'll have a leatherman wave and maybe the WM1.

Overnight, one of these knives and a laplander saw. The axe just came in a couple days ago. I've never used one before and I'm looking forward to playing with it this fall to see if I like it better than or in conjunction with the saw.

Edit: Forgot..... Bark river Canadian special, LT Wright Lagom, Fallkniven WM1, ESEE 3, Gansfors Bruk Small forest axe.

Many, many years ago I EDCed this one in my back pack. And I do mean EVERYDAY. In a crapy little thick card board sheath.
But
that was in the city mostly.
I spent a week camping on the beach in San Diego with it if that counts.

When I go camping I just take a Svea stove and bottle or two of white gas. So never had to go through all those old school "sheeeeenanigans" you speak of.

Hope this helps. :D:):D:)

The delica does basically everything the mora is really just for piece of mind in case I need to make a fire or something along those lines.
