Well I recently saw a youtube video of Green Pete making a knife. And I am really interested in starting to make knives. What book should I buy that would teach me about every aspect of knifemaking? Thanks...

The $50 Dollar knifeshop - Wayne Goddard
The Wonder of Knifemaking - Wayne Goddard
The Complete Bladesmith - Jim Hrisoulas

The $50 knife shop is enough to get you started. The other two are good books as well. Check out www.engnath.com for quite a bit of info as well. If folks around here know where you are, there might be someone near you making knives. Going out to someone's shop is the quickest way to learn... lot's of makers down in Florida.

read my post about SRJ's video. If a picture is worth a thousand of words, a video ougtha be worth 1 million :) .

Beware that some stuff in KM books is bit outdated and might send you on a wrong path.

Like - grinding with hard stones, using acid to etch logos .

Darom has 3 most beatiful books, full of excellent pictures and description of various techniques used by various KMs around the world. The books are rather pricey, but if you can borrow them - that'd provide plenty of Ahhhhhhhhs, Oooooohhhs, inspiration and ideas.

Custom Knifemaking by Tim McCreight.

Takes you step by step through ten projects and leaves you in very good position to carry on with the rest of your journey. Each project exposes you to some new skills. It presumes nothing but hand tools to start and take you through selection or construction of some useful tools.

It is a bit dated, before some of the current 'best pick' grinders for example - and the discussion of steels misses some of the newer super steels, but it is still the best starting point I've seen by a wide margin.

Welcome to the journey.

Rob!

I'll second Rob's endorsement of Tim Mccreight's book. He's very good at conveying what's needed on a basic level for turning out your first knives. His other books on various types of metalworking are good as well. Goddard's "$50 Knifeshop" is a good begining place too.

I pretty much got my start though with David Boye's book "Step-By-Step Knifemaking: You Can Do It" for most of my introductory knifemaking info.
