What brand+designations of epoxy are brominated?

Does anyone know where to get brominated epoxy? Are there certain product names of specific brands which are guaranteed to be brominated?

In case it helps anyone answer, brominated epoxies are flame retardant because they are self extinguishing.

Since this can't possibly be a concern with knives, it would be a good thing if you told us why you wanted Brominated Resin.

I would just call West System tech support and ask.

Are you making the "Sword of Azrael"?

If you are a smoke jumper and you accidentally jump into the middle of the fire, you need flame retardant epoxy so the scales don't fall off. That's why Ruana knives were/are so popular with jumpers - they don't use epoxy.

I thought that's what corby bolts were for. Besides, if you are at the point where you need your epoxy to "self extinguish", then I am afraid you need a different tool than a knife. Now I could see where the radiant heat, one might be exposed to while fighting a forest fire, could cause some adhesives to fail. In that case corby bolts and a high temp adhesive would seem like the ticket. Then again I have no idea what the OP wants to stick together and then put in a fire.

Since cured epoxy resin is generally considered non-flammable, I think it is moot.

Either way, it wouldn't matter on a knife, as the handle material is more flammable in most all cases.

I am guessing you are joshing us..........but in case it is a real statement, I gotta reply to this. -
The very last attribute a smoke jumper would select his knife for would be the epoxy or lack of it in the handle. Shape, metal type, durability, special features, scales material, etc. ..... but epoxy....NO. If the flames get close/hot enough to make the scales fall off....you are already toast. Ruana knives are popular with heavy use people because they have cast aluminum handle parts and a through tang. Strength is the attribute...not lack of epoxy.

Jeeze guys, lighten up. As someone who spent 4 college summers fighting forest fires, I'm well aware that if you are close enough to the fire for the epoxy to melt your ass is grass anyway.

There are 5 Ruana knives and 1 Ruana hatchet in my family and when we bought them, no makers used epoxy.

A smoke jumper told me they liked the "smoke jumper model" because it was relatively inexpensive, it held an edge forever, and it was small enough to tape to the chute straps so they could get to it easily to cut the chute cords in case they were hung up in a tree.

Last joke I ever make here.

I didn't realize it was a joke either. Now that I know, it is really funny. Don't stop due to this thread.

I sure would like to see a response from the OP.

The reason a lot of threads end bad is that black letters on a white screen don't convey emotion. If we were discussing this in a group the emotion would have conveyed it as a joke.
As a moderator, Stacy has to take every post at face value. There are many false statements posted on this forum and without the emoticons, LOL's, or HEHEHE's he doesn't know if a person is serious or not. I applaud him for the job he does of squelching the bad info. and bringing the truth to light.

Off topic.
Not knowing what "brominated" was I sincerely thought that the OP was asking for epoxies that have been approved or nominated by "bros" here on the forum.
Bro-minated.

Hey Kai,
I don't think we "bros" can approve or nominate anything on Bladeforums unless we have a paid membership. THAT WAS A JOKE.

What happened to the guy that "Bro-ched" the subject?

I apologize for seeming harsh. I looked at your profile, and nothing indicated any smoke jumper experience.
I thought it may have been in jest, but without any "winkie" or other indicator, I replied to it as a real statement. I should have prefaced my comments with, "I assume this was a joke, but if it isn't....". I have changed that.

I attended a seminar of experienced makers this past weekend. Even at a place like that and outrageous statement or question will pop up and the person will defend it because," I read it on a knife forum", or, "A famous maker said it". Things on these forums are pulled up in searches by people who have not the first idea if they are true or not. Some kid may google "Rauna Knives" and find this thread...and tell people that smoke jumpers are only allowed to use that brand because the handles won't fall off in a fire.

I agree that Rauna makes a tough knife, BTW.
