what brand has the most efficient wave?

Cold Steel , Emerson/Kershaw/ Spyderco and zip-tie mods all work equally well for me and the horn that wears my pants is not on a knife .

The Spyderco P'kal has the best shaped "wave" Ive experienced, grabs every time. That little rod isn't hard on pockets, either. Thhat said, I'm currently beating on Kershaw, CQC4kXL and I have it set up to wave forward. Very relaible. I find that waving forward against the crotchside seam of the pocket is much more reliable than rearward against the rear seam.

FWIW, I wear canvas Dickies 99% of the time and have not noticed that either the "Rough g10" or "Steel horn" of a wave wear on my pants any more than my job does. I draw/replace a LOT daily, as well, and I've only got three pairs of work dickies...so...

I wear dockers crossover cargo pants. I carry an emerson roadhouse everyday for work. Really no wear issues to speak of. Although i seem to wave open my knife a little differently than others do. I tend to purposely half open the knife with the wave then use a wrist action to complete the opening. Not every time but some times. Its a little easier on the knife.

Emersons do wave open the best in my experience. The shape and size of the wave us just right for a consistent opening.

How do the Southern Grind folders wave? They look like nice knives.

They wave perfectly. Honestly was surprised to make it to page 2 before seeing anyone mention them.

The other surprise is that no one mentioned the ZT0850. While it does not have the wave hook, it waves open like a champ with the thumb stud and a slight angle draw out of the pocket.

Meant tongue in cheeck:

That statement is sort of useless, unless you at the same time describe the job/work wear on your pants. We have no scale of comparison, as we dont know, how much your job wears out your Dickies (no pun intended).

If all you do all day, is lightly prance alongside unicorns in rose-smelling fields of green...., that means not a lot of wear on your pants and in extension not a lot of wear made by your waved knife :-)

If your work on the other hand includes traversing lines of barbed wire on a daily basis, that means a lot of wear on your pants and you are thus saying, that your waved knife indeed wears out your pockets, as "your knife wears the pocket to the same degree as my work." :-)

The only ones I've actually played with are the Spyderco factory wave, and the zip ties on a Spyderco.

Hands down the best wave is the peg wave on the Spyderco P'kal. First off it catches the best of any wave and the BB lock is excellent for waveing. Secondly it does not damage your pocket in the way other hook shaped waves do. Third, it can be removed or replaced simply by screwing it in or out.

Also, I personally find Emerson's waves to be the worst. I find Spyderco's (as on the Endura) more pronounced wave catches way better and is also seemingly less harsh on pockets. The Spyderco wave also opens bottles way better.

The Emerson wave is the smallest and seems to just eat through every pocket until the seam separates where you are catching it. Not to say I don't find it effective and I can still wave with it each time.

Pro tip: if you wave a knife and it doesn't completely open just hit the blade lightly against the clothed part of your leg. This will knock it the rest of the way open.

Thats frikken funny!! Nice won CM:thumbsup:
Cheers

To address the OP the only wave knife I have had is a Emerson Specwar with smooth scales. Works really well. My biggest gripe about it is I feel like you need space around you to effectively deploy it. If there is somebody(thing) next to you it is kinda difficult to use the wave. Same for sitting. Just my two pennies.
Cheers

Reverse wave that bitch by clipping it to your left pocket and waving it off the front of your pocket into reverse grip. There now you can wave in your own personal space.

The Spyderco wave is probably the most reliable, it's also gigantic and horrible looking. The CS thumb plate mentioned above is really quite good too, my Mini AK waves 100% despite being really small.

I discovered that too. Caught me by surprise a couple of times. Then realized if I just alter the angle of pull slightly, I could get it to wave pretty consistently. Actually a nice surprise.

How true.
I have stopped carrying a SOG because their clip, deep carry with holes in it, completely destroyed a pair of work jeans after 1 day of carry. That shitty clip literally holds on to material in a death grip.
Doesn’t have to be a waved knife to tear fabric.
Joe

Some claim dimished wear using 'correct technique' but the wave is metal yanking at cloth - and that will (eventually) leave a mark.

Clips have been mentioned - even standard clips on non-waved knives other than Emerson will eventually lead to wear of the pants material, no matter how rounded the clips is.

You cant constantly remove a clipped or waved knife from the pocket without eventually have some wear/signs from that.
