I saw this on another forum and I waited your guys (and gals) opinion on it. What brands do you trust? It could be clothing, cars, motorcycles, knives, guns, etc. I put it here because it could be anything. Hopefully this is the right section for it. I'll start it off:

Ford
Yamaha (motorcycles, ATV's, sound equipment)
Buck
Kershaw
Smith & Wesson (guns)
Haynes
Toshiba (Computers)
RCA

I have had good luck with all these brands, and would not hesitate to buy an item from them.

I don't think it's a matter of luck. Two things make a brand trustworthy:
(1) how they intentionally and thoughtfully set out to make their product do what it should. Does the company take a serious approach to the quality improvement thinking of Deming, Juran etc.
(2)how they respond when it goes wrong.

Toyota is probably the best example of the first. They set out to make cars trustworthy and the evidence suggests they succeed.

My favourite example of the second is probably untrue but is a story about a guy whose Rolls Royce broke down and had to go back to the factory to be fixed. He got it back and asked about the bill for the repairs. "What repair bill, Sir? Rolls Royce motor cars don't break down." :D

Top of the list for me would have to be Honda motorcycles and atv's. Never had a problem with any of them other than scheduled maintainance. That includes the '81 Honda bike that I have now which is your basic add gas and go and change the oil when you feel like it.

I have always had great luck with Ford vehicles (well mostly Mercury) as well.

Case knives and Zippo lighters got to support the hometown companies.

Wranglers
Carharrts
Cummins
John Deere
BFGoodrich
Surefire
Danner, Whites, Justin all make nice boots
Severtech

I trust brands that produce quality products, have excellent customer service and a good environmental track record.

I trust:

Buck
Spyderco
Benchmade
Subaru
LG
Nintendo

An equally important thread would be brands we don't trust.

One brand that I will never buy from again is Ford (well... I'll never buy American again, but Ford's at the top of the list).

Lincoln
Suzuki motorcycles
AG Russell
Craftsman
Lian Li (computer cases)

--------------------

I'd like to say "Ford", since my truck has nearly 200,000 miles. But that's related more to the specific model than the overall brand. My impression of other Ford vehicles ranges from "Meh" to "Blech."

Wife's car is a Lexus, the #1 quality brand for many years, until recently beaten by Porsche. Not many problems with the car so far but it's uncomfortable, ugly, and the interior design is a mess. :(

Hewlett-Packard (best calculators ever)
Omega (my best watch)
Panasonic (rock solid electronics, even Technics stuff)
Toyota (its all true regarding the quality, etc)
New Balance (great trail shoes)
Columbia (clothing that fits well and is durable)

Hewlett-Packard (great customer service even though they don't speak English "good")
Spyderco (great knives, fit and finish isn't perfect but well designed knives)
Sony (favorite electronic company)

Subaru - If you've never driven one, you wouldnt understand.
Nintendo > Atari
Philips
O'Neil
LG
Newcastle Brown Ale

Toyota (amazing consistency)
LL Bean (amazing consistency-- products and service are both without peer)
Asics (underrated and good sneaks)
Sony (very good consistency)
Merrill (very good consistency)
Old Navy (good cheap stuff)
Clorox Wipes (I love this product)
White (lawn mowing equipment, great stuff)
Maxpedition (what's not to like?)
Remington (great long arms)
Vagisil (huh?)
Buderus (central heating plants (boilers), top of the line reliability and efficiency)
Panasonic (everything they do is good, except their pre-plasma TVs)
Ruger
Heckler & Koch
Dell (overrated but still reliable stuff)
Smith & Wesson
Busse (love em or loathe em)
Spyderco (the pinnacle of American-made affordable merchandise with superb QC)
RCA (their old televisions are tops, not even close)
Makita
Cuisinart
Puffs (I like to blow my snozz on these)
Converse (good sneaks)
Trojan (ain't busted one yet)
Swiss Army/Victorinox (great pocket tools and watches and pairing knives)
Chicago Cutlery (great kitchen steel)
Uniden
Miele (vacuums are amazing)

Popular brands with which I've had bad luck:

Levi's (their jeans are useless for anyone with a penis larger than 4")
Samsung (phones and DVD players, not good luck)
Honda (one small car was kinda glitchy)
Nike (made for metrosexuals only with narrow feminine feet)
Kleenex (they can't get the dispensing concept down)
Compaq (junk)
Craftsman (well-made but poorly engineered junk)
Canon
V-Tech (junk that has over saturated the market)

Nope. My one S&W, a Sport 22, was horrible. I'm glad I sold that thing.

There's nothing left of RCA, just a name plate.

Me?

Let's see...

For guns, nothing but H&K.

I like Sony for electronics and Onkyo for audio especially. Yamaha is good too.

For watches, Zenith.

For Scotch, Balvenie... it's just consistently good.

For Pinot Noir, it's gotta be Lange. Never the best, but always consistently good.

Benchmade does good knives. So does Darrel Ralph... just consistently good.

Weber-Stephens for grills... just consistently good.

Murray Carter for kitchen knives.

The Fountain Pen Hospital in New York. I'm not a fountain pen user much less collector, but my younger brother is and they've never failed to advise me well on gifts for him. When my brother gave me a Lamy roller ball pen for Christmas several years ago, I didn't like it; but I called the Hospital and the doctors there diagnosed me over the phone and prescribed prescription refills for me which have changed my life in a small -- but very good -- way. I just ordered a dozen more today, in fact. Wonderful people.

I have to add these food brands as being outstanding:

McIlhenny - Tobasco
Community Coffee

Khukuri's : Himalayan Imports for their customer service and support.

Subaru motor cars.

Yamaha Motorcycles.

Dan Wesson Firearms.

Dell Laptops.

Rhodesian Ridgeback dogs! ;)
