I started out for years buying Schrade Old Timers, and pretty much carried them until I joined the Army. In Germany I started using Puma, and then when I came back and got into the gun business I met a lot of the people in the knife side of the house. That's when I had a bunch of Gerber, Cold Steel, Spyderco, etc laying around. (Seriously, I got pulled over one time and they hauled 13 firearms and 27 knives out of the cab of the truck. That took a while to explain...)
A few years back I realized that a good custom knife often cost less than some of the production stuff on the shelves. That's when I headed off in another direction. Looking through the inventory today I find few production knives (I've bought 4 in the past year) but a fair number of customs.
I think a lot of us go through cycles, and to me that's part of what make collecting fun.
In answer to the OP, currently I have about a dozen knives from the late Ron Gaston. He made clean, under-rated blades. Here's my favorite:
Most of my accumulation is one of a kind but I do have about 15 SAKs, 12/13 Case, 11/12 Spydercos, 7/8 Benchmades and about 250/260 assorted slipjoints, lockbacks and fixed blades.
I have more Case knives than any others. I guess the reason is I love the cv steel slipjoints and they are relatively inexpensive considering their quality.
