My vote goes for the Cold Steel Tuff Lite. This knife feels like an extension of my hand, and is the only knife with a sub-3" blade that I've ever enjoyed using. I'd love to see this with some kind of stabilized wood, with M390 or ZDP-189...

I'm sure a lot of people will agree when I say spyderco tenacious, kershaw cryo, and Ontario rat.

I'm still waiting for Cold Steel to extend the XHP upgrades to the Tuff-Lite - it's the only one of their designs that really grabs my attention. The other knife that jumps to mind is the Kershaw Cryo G10 - it's a good design, but a little chunky, has an unimpressive steel, and is assisted. I recently picked up a RealSteel H5 Gerfalcon, which reminds me of a larger Cryo, but with better execution - it has better steel, a bearing flipper, and has been lightened so that it's about the same weight as the smaller Cryo. I'd like to see the Cryo get the same treatment - it's certainly a popular enough design.

The Cryo II is the only thing that came to mind out of my collection, which suffers the same three drawbacks scaled up more than proportional to its size. It was supposed to be my gateway Hinderer, but it opens like some kind of jungle trap swinging shut from the weight of large rocks on a vine and pulley system. (Swwwish-thunk)

I don't think better steel would make up for that.

I wanted better steel on my Nano, since the custom was out of my price range, but Böker finally delivered that with their Decade Edition in VG-10. Still not entirely satisfied, but it's good enough.

I don't know what counts as being "budget" in the first place, but I've said it before that I'd love to see a Becker BK16 from the factory in D2 with micarta scales. If they could produce that for $100ish, it could be an ESEE 4 killer.

The full sized Case Sodbuster (not the Jr.) with jigged bone scales would be really sweet. Hey, let's dream "jigged aged amber bone stag" or just plain "Sambar stag" scales. That would be a winner !

Spyderco makes one that's a locking folder that has nearly the same blade. The handle is g-10 and guarantee just as or more comfortable and ergonomic.

The premium version is an Emerson CQC-7.

I knew someone was going to bring that up.
The Emerson is a liner lock.
The steel on the Emerson is not much better if at all.
G10 too course on the Emerson, the Kershaw needs more just not as much as the Emerson.
The Emerson has that cartoonish blade to handle ratio.
The Kershaw has a V-grind.
The Kershaw has better F & F.
The Emerson is made in the US, I will give it that.

This reminds me of those I know who continue to think the DNA rock bands playing the casinos and amusement parks now are the same band that recorded the hits.

A CQC-7 is an Emerson knife.
The ZT's and Kershaws are not Emerson knives.

BTW, if you ever really USE your knife, that blade/handle ratio makes it more comfortable to USE than the others.....and Kershaw doesn't have nearly the QC/F+F level of the current Emersons.

I guess most people who buy knives don't use theirs either because most knives don't have that crazy ratio.

Not too many brands have a 300+ reply thread debating the poor F & F of their brand.

More importantly you seem to contradict yourself:

"The premium version is an Emerson CQC-7"
"The ZT's and Kershaws are not Emerson knives."

I'm out, I gotta go not use my Kershaw CQC-7 and ZT 0630

Would love to see the Hissatsu or other James Williams folders done in high end materials with better fit and finish.
Not to join in any argument but I'd also love to see a CQC-7 or 7 super with high end materials and better fit and finish.
Also the Mah Eraser, I know it's made now buy some knife makers now but it'd be nice to see an affordable version but ZT or someone.

Mike

I've always thought at the Cold Steel Rajah III was crying out for a premium model!

Fits the hand just right, and blade size and angle just beg to be used!

First page and there's already a pointless argument. This is why we can't have nice things, guys. Keep things civil, FFS, and try to avoid bickering pointlessly if you like to consider yourselves rational adults.
