Your trashcan save looks like a Model #571. They came in 5" and 6" blade lengths. As gunsil and sactroop have mentioned, the knife has been altered. The Pommel has been pinned on. I'm suspecting that the threaded tang portion broke off as that was a weak point of that design. While the 571 looks like a MarkI and it may have influenced the MKI design, it was a commericial knife long before that. KA-BAR also had a #585 and #594 that used the same blade but had slightly different handle/guard/pommel configurations.
Date?...guessing late 1920s-1940. Gunsil may be able to narrow that range.
