what can I use as a sanding plate?

Bad idea, they won't even give or sell cheap the scraps to the customer who they are fabricating the countertops for.

Perhaps you could request samples of Quartz countertop material? I know you can get them in 6"x12" pieces. The cheapest place to get granite tiles is out of the bigger retailer's dumpster, I have done it a lot. You can also look for what are called orphan tiles, leftovers that don't match newer batches, this is really common and often what you find in the dumpster.

Or I have lots of granite tiles, some of which are headed to the dump, and a tile saw to cut them up. The problem is shipping would be the biggest expense. If 3.9"x10" would be long enough then they would safely fit in a medium flat rate box.
that would be great. I am happy to pay shipping. 3.5X11" would be perfect size

Shipping plus $10. How many do you want? If the tiles are the same length as the box then there is a much better chance they will get damaged, hence 10" long. Large flat rate boxes are 12" if you want the tiles to be a little longer. 3.9" wide lets me cut a 12" tile into 3. Granite tiles are Santa Cecilia.

Sorry for the delay, I have been taking a few days off to do some major shop cleaning.

I found a 12x18 piece of slate left over from replacing our hearth. It will work for my sanding plate if I can find someone wirh a tile cutter, or maybe I could get a blade for my power saw. . thanks for your offer to help, yet I think I can manage thru this

Many granite countertop places will give samples to take home and see how they look in you kitchen etc.

Slates are usually easy to cut as they are on the soft side, but also tend to come apart as they are stratified deposits so be careful. You could get a diamond blade for cement siding for a framing saw, I have cut stone that way before.
