Got a couple of nice knives now. But it's bugging me I don't have the use for them. It's boring just to collect and not use- don't want to go there. I have a 8-5 white collar job. I want to use my knife but on what?

Not everyone has a job where a knife comes in handy. One place you can always use a good slicer is in the kitchen.
I use mine every day to open boxes, cut tape, zip ties and such. At home I will sometimes just whittle a twig, handle the knife, open and close it, open mail, etc.. It's sometimes just insurance more than necessity.

If your job doesn't require one, QUIT IT AND FIND ONE THAT DOES! :D

But seriously, if you really want to use your knives more, you could always take up camping, boating, hunting or some kind of outdoor activity.

I order knives and have them sent to work so I have something to use my knives on - opening the boxes!!!:D

Funny, because, while I don't use a knife every day, I use it more often than you'd think. And yeah, a lot of that is for opening boxes and stuff.

Case in point, though: I was walking through the alley yesterday and noticed that my "shortcut" to Burger King had become completely overgrown with new branches. Well, humble self just happened to have a good knife on him and, about a minute later, voila no more branches. OK, sure, they were somebody else's branches, but they were intruding into a public right-of-way, so I figure they were fair game.

In other words, if you have a knife on you, you will use it. If you don't, you won't.

I'm a construction worker and use my knife everyday for lots of stuff at work. Wanna trade jobs? :D

I do this too. I ride a bike for exercise and there were several places where overgrown plants would brush me as I rode by. I did some pruning and cleared the nuisance vegatation myself. Problem solved.

I have a number of what I consider good quality knives including Bark Rivers, ESEE, Falkniven, Spyderco, and Randalls. Do I use them everyday, no. Do I use them every week, no. I have a SAK in my pocket, probably the least expensive knife I own, and I use some implement on it everyday. I think anyone who leads at least a semi-active life will use a pocket knife quite often.

I'm just happy to have mine with me. I don't have to have it (my knife) in my hand around the clock. Knowing that I have a quality knife or SAK or multitool is very comforting to me. Though I do seem to get my fair share of usage with my knives on the job. I push the issue for the use of a pocket knife around the house outside of my personal den (mancave). Outside in the yard or in the garage I find a ton of uses for my SAK and or multitool. It's like a fight, if you go looking for something to use your knife on it could go bad but if you are just EDCing a good tool and prepared for a whatever situation, it usually works out very well...;)

Even if you don't use your knife its still peace of mind in your pocket. Just incase you run into some evil type individual on a dark night that wants to do you harm. Better to have it and not need it. Than to need it and not have it. It may just get you out of a jam on some dark night where you normally don't frequent.

If you carry your knife, you'll find uses for it. Two kids need to share a cookie. Family unity requires that it be perfectly halved--use a knife. Need to slip another cocktail umbrella into a kids covered cup, drill a hole in the top with a knife. Shorts are slightly tattered, a knife cuts those unsightly strings lickety-split. Tonight I'll be grilling and checking the meat I'll cut a small test whole. That's just my day today in Maui.

I use mine to cut bread, lemons, dog biscuits, weeds and vines, cardboard,

making holes in wood and plastic.....the list goes on.

I was watching Jeopardy on TV the other day. At the beginning of the show, when Alex Trebek was 'interviewing' each of the day's contestants, he asked one of them why she'd developed an obsession for buying power tools at the local home improvement store. He asked her if she liked any particular type of tool more than others, and she said, 'Saws... circular saws, jig saws, chain saws, whatever.' He asked what she liked to do or build with all these saws. Her answer pretty much summed up how I feel about my knives. She said:

'Not much, really. I just like knowing they're there.'

Couldn't have said it better myself... :D

Oracle DBA here - not really a knife job. Today, I used my SAK for opening some cookies (ok, I'm a bit of a fat DBA) and to trim my mustache. The toothpick picked the cookie goo out of my teeth. When I got home, I used my Ka-Bar kukri machete to clear some vines that are trying to eat my fence.

How can ya not use your knife? Opportunities abound. :D

What do you do before 8 and after 5?
(BTW, nice hours, I work 06:30 till well after 5)

What do you do on weekends?

Are you a home owner?
Do you hike or camp?
Do you do volunteer manual labor projects?

Using a knife is a real world thing. I don't use a knife much at my cube farm job, but I do when I work around the house or camp or help out at church.

That just happened to me today. A nice sticker bush got my right arm and drew blood. I had my revenge and cleaned out the path. :D
