What can your cheap knife do?

I agree. A rat 1 or even a cold steel voyager or other cold steel model since they really are a good deal for what you get . I think cold steels aus8 is a little better than the rats, but neither are bad .

I'm telling yall if you haven't tried a mora you owe it to yourself. A mora and a rat 1 or cold steel folder is all you would ever need . I could go rest of my life with 2 of the 3 folders I mentioned and a dmt coarse diamond and be good to go. I don't need the other knives I have but I do enjoy it

I have a few Moras (companion model I think) because at those prices I couldn't resist stocking up...

With that, and having a Rat-1, Utilitac II and a Voyager from CS, I guess in many ways I'm set for life.

I'm sure I'll be buying another knife soon though, if people don't stop posting pics of this new Crooked River knife. ;)

12C27, C100, 8Cr13MoV knives for under $10 have all worked very well for me. Cut well, hold a decent edge, etc.

I like to use my Utilitac on Cardboard sometimes... nothing like cardboard to get the gunk off of a satin finish. Harsh, yeah, but it works. :P

Get super sharp, cut things possibly easier than any other knife I've owned because the blade is full height hollow ground so thin, and be fantastic in general.

I love inexpensive knives! Everyone's threshold is different but it's your thread and you selected $45 as the threshold; mine is actually a tad lower - but be that as it may.

Knives had characteristics and qualities. Some excel in strength, others ergos, function, edge retention, ease of sharpening, corrosion resistance, aesthetics ... I also rate another category: the I don't care about it factor.

IMHO, the number one threat to a folder is loss. To mitigate that risk I use price. When I travel, the RAT 1, RAT 2 and/or Utilitac is typically my choice. If bigger/tougher use is anticipated, the CS Voyager (AUS8) also gets to fly. I can beat the living snot out of these knives without care or fear ... though, to be honest, they seem to keep coming back asking for more. If one or more of them should be lost or stolen, I certainly would not be happy - but it's not like losing my Sebenza.

I am a Buck 110 fan - who isn't? And the buck 110 fits under your threshold and, other than weight and carrying options, is one heck of a folder than can do (and has done for me) just about everything one could ask of a folder ... and provide that special something that is difficult to quantify.

In fixed blades, I will use and abuse Schrade knives with darned near reckless abandoned, saving my beloved (and preferred) Beckers and Busses for "better" outings. Anymore, I hardly find myself in the field without a Mora on me or near me. The HD Companion Carbon is a handy knife at a dandy price. I have one permanently strapped to my pack as well as a couple more here and there just for convenience. My CRK One Piece Range knives come out of the safe anymore just long enough for a rub down with fresh mineral oil though they have certainly earned their keeps for me over the years.

The Sebenza, Adamas, Bucker-Strider and some of my other folders can do as much, if not more than the "cheap" folders referenced in my post, but the lesser priced knives seem to get the use and abuse.

Whoa really? Is that, normal? I only ask because my Adamas is D2 and sure, I am also paying for Benchmade and the Axis lock and all this stuff but, whoa. I am not a steel junky but D2 would have been a steel I would have called "premium", at least for my needs.

Limited edition from Knifeworks. I don't know how limited, so if you want one grab one now. It's a screaming deal.

Yeah, I've got a rock solid buttonlock in 14c28n with excellent fit and finish, handsome aluminum scales, a 3.5" blade that weighs 3.5oz that cost $42. Oh, almost forgot the bearing pivot. So, yeah, that sucker will do a LOT.

I am pretty curious as to what this knife is. I'm guessing a Real Steel model?

A. Yes, Knifeworks has/had some LE D2 Rat 1 folders for around $33 if I remember correctly.

B. Excellent guess! It's the Real Steel Griffin E775. It's a ridiculous amount of fun to play with one on the couch and certainly appears to be a very good knife beyond that.

It can do anything but be readily re-purchased.

STOP DISCONTINUING THE THINGS I LOVE :(

My Ontario Rat 1 has handled every task I have ever thrown at it, including being pressed into service to cut a good bit of PVC plumbing pipe for an emergency fix when waiting for a saw was not a good option!

I have knives that cost 8-10 times as much, but this is actually my favorite knife, just because of how little it cost and how sterling it has performed, and what we've been through together.

Carved the handle for my handmade knife. I like cheap knives for whittling because they work best razor sharp and 1095 is much harder to go from sharp to razor sharp than 440a so I find it faster than one long sharpening

A few more for the list would be Case Sodbuster, Mora, and the Svord Peasant.

Fourteen hours of commercial electrical work today a with loading in and setting up the job site, installing conduit and so on. My Sodbuster Jr came in handy all day. Great working knife.

I take them when traveling, or when expecting abusive use. Some have been used to practice doing modifications. Mostly they just take up space.

Another fan of cheap knives here. Opinels and Moras mostly, plus MArttiini, rough rider, Condor, Cold Steel, MAM, Aitor, Mercator, Anza, Kershaw and others. Only four of my 80-odd knives sold for more than $45.00.

They will do anything I could ask of a knife, in the shop, in the kitchen or in the woods.

I am digging that RAT. And I just bought some damn knives! The Griffin is a worse case because they didn't support lefties!
