What Cha Think RC-4 or RC-5 ?

I see your point, but do you want to see a disappointed face on christmas?

No..... and that's why I am worried, but when I was a child, you did not get much at Christmas. I would have been blown away by this knife at his age. Plus, I got him a Ruger 10/22 which I will be paying on for along time. My childhood was...... I wont even go there. He got a lot more money wise, then the other 2 children.

.

I know how it is to want something as a kid and insist and insist, with Dad knowing all along that I would be better suited with something else. I can think of 3 times in my childhood I wanted a particular knife and tried to talk me out of it. 2 of the 3 are in the garbage somewhere and the last one I sold on the exchange.

I’d give him the 4 for Christmas and tell him you got a good deal on it and to see if he liked it. After that he may decide the 4 is the perfect knife for him, or it might start his ESEE addiction and he’ll start mowing lawns and collecting cans. :D

ETA: If he is going to be carrying it a lot, he'll be glad he has the lighter weight of the 4 I think.

I know what you mean. I did the same thing as a kid, wanted something and dad said i'd be better off with something else. While the old man was right, it still didn't stop me wanting, and eventually having to find out for myself the hard way. Give him the 4 and see how he likes it, once he has the 4 in hand i'm sure it will grow on him!

1066vic,
I got the 4 for $80.00 plus shipping. It will be the best knife he has ever got and owns. He is only 15, so I have been giving him cheap stuff till now. Too me, this is a high end knife to be proud of. I hope he forgets the 5 and is thrilled with the 4. I almost Ebayed the 4 already to get the 5, then decided the 4 is more practicle and was comfortable with the decision. It's his contant harping that is giving me the doubt.
If he keeps on the wanting the 5 after Christmas, Offer to pay $5 for every "B" and $10 for every "A" on his final report card towards the 5 in May -- with the rest being on him.
If he really wants it, he'll do everything he can to earn it. (including saving holiday & B-day $$ towards it and maybe some side jobs mowing lawns)
between the 10/22 & the 4, you've gone above and beyond.
Have a merry Christmas and don't dwell on this -- I agree with you that the 4 is a GREAT all-arounder. (and congrats on scoring a good deal on it, too!)

If he still wants the 5, I offer two options. First, have him carry a 1 pound weight off his belt for a while. Two, get a BK2, if cost is an issue.
I don't know your son, but the big thick blade has a cool factor to it. He could be the crap out of the BK2 and then actually use the ESEE 4 as a knife.
I own the ESEE 5, and although I like it, the ESEE 4 is a more practical knife for hunting camping etc..

Give him the 4 (because you bought it before he started talking about the 5) and if he has to have the 5, let him ebay it; get the money then buy (and wait for the 5) and you help him with the difference. That way he also has responsibility of dealing with his own stuff.

I think with a 22 and that 4 for christmas he should be very happy, i would be, give him them and just see how it goes.:D

Stick with the 4. He's getting a knife from his dad. Who wouldn't be proud and happy with that?

Stick with the 4, imo. The 5 cannot chop well, and can't really do anything that great as a woods knife, excluding batoning. (I say this and it is my 2nd favorite ESEE) The 4 is a better all around knife, and will serve him fine. Unless he plans on prying.. which shouldn't be done with any knife anyway.

Is the main purpose of this knife for skinning? If it is, the 4 is the clear winner. If it is going to be a general use knife, maybe not.

The 4 is still my favorite because it is so universal. The 5 however is more capable of harder uses and abuse due to its ¼” thickness. It also chops pretty well because of the weight it carries.

Ditto!!!

Well..... for the most part, everyone seems to think the 4 is the best choice and I also think that. Hopefully, he will think about it and agree, once he is wearing it around showing it off to his friends. I told him the next Deer or Hog that is killed, he is skinning it. Time to man up, and be able to do it on his own. Thanks for the opinions everyone.

He is going to love the RC-4. It is, in my opinion, the best all around the knife that ESEE makes. It excels at chopping and slicing, may not be the best chopper but it is still fantastic. Im sure that he will be more than pleased with the 4, I know I would :D. I can't think of any real reason to sell the 4 and try to get the 5. Both are great but I prefer the 4

I think the 4 is the better knife for every reason already said. I use that one and I am a hunter as well. He's 15 though and if I could get the 5 for him I would. At 15 there are more important things than being practical.

Just curious about how your boy liked the 4.

Just curious about how your boy liked the 4.

I just logged in to tell the rest of the story, for I hate when I read something and never know the ending.
So...... he opened his gifts and was speechless. He then came over and gave me a big hug and thanked me for the presents. Hugging is not something we ever do so, I really felt like he was blown away by the knife and .22 rifle. My son know's times are hard and think he realizes the debt involved to get this for him. I told him if he wanted the 5, I would sell it and he could use his Christmas money to pay the difference. He said NO! I want this knife. I need to contact the company and get him a TEK-LOC as all the knife came with was the Molle straps., other than that, all was fantastic and had 3 happy children and a few more grey hairs worrying with the extra debt I have :)

Glad to hear he was happy. The 4 IS a really nice knife, no doubt he will enjoy it.

Sounds like you picked the perfect presents AND raised a good, appreciative kid.

Great way to end this story! Glad to hear the outcome. And I would suggest to him the Becker BK2. I own one and love it. It only makes me want the 5 even more!
