what chem do I need to etch a blade

Etching of what sort specifically? Electro-etching a maker's mark or etching a hamon or damascus pattern on a blade?
 
See, I dumb, I was want to etch my grandson's name on a small hunting knife I'm making him.
 
That is one to file away for trial at some stage. I have been using three punch marks in a triangle as it was my fathers tool mark but this etching may be a neater way to do it.
