What companies are off of your radar?

Dang, 3Guard., I was wondering if there was anything (other than a pointy stick) that you were interested in...:D

Actually, I've got a list almost like yours in my files, that's kind of a compilation of what's in this thread: good points, and criticisms of most mfrs. that I've come across here. It really hammers down the point of match the knife to the job. That way, if I'm looking at something to buy, I can go to my list and see what folks here thought of, or my impressions of certain brands in the past.

thx - cpr

Emerson was until lately, looking at A-100 or CQC-10 now. other than that Busse seems a little too overpriced for me

In my radar;

Emerson - I like their styles and weight.
Busse - Good blade all around
Gerber - The Easy Rider series only though
Buck- I just have a long time warm fuzzy for a Buck
Kershaws - most anything in the titanium line
Out of My Radar;

Frost - glovebox mail openers at best

Out of My Radar;

Frost - glovebox mail openers at best
Marbles - most of the new stuff just isn't getting my attention
Benchmade- I used to like them, had a good 710 but, all of their knives look alike now
and I've had issues with two or three.

Spyderco. Although they seem to be very popular among forum members, I rarely consider them when knife shopping. Reasons:
* I already own several.
* Their designs are so similar - if you have one, you have them all.
* Blade play is a problem with almost every one of mine.
* They're never found on super-duper closeout sales.

Of radar benchmade for me,itz almost the 4th month and still no new knives,where are the 2009,plus the last few years they have nothing new but knives that look the same and a pen wtf.......

Of the respected cutlery companies, the only ones I really won't ever buy from again are Benchmade and folders SOG.

If and when Benchmade stops their silly business practices, then maybe. But until then, I'll EDC my 710 until it falls apart and move on to something else (if it ever falls apart... probably not too likely).

SOG... well I just don't like their designs. I'm open to giving one of their fixed blades a chance, but the Flash 2 turned me off of their folders for good. They're overpriced for the materials they use, they have the absolute worst pocket clip placement for me of any knife I've ever handled, and when I had a problem that was covered under warranty they wouldn't do a thing to help me out.

For foldiers, I'll be sticking to Buck and Spyderco for good probably. A Ka-Bar Becker and RAT are on the horizon for fixed blades though (I haven't bought a new fixed blade in at least five years).

CRKT - Never been impressed.
Cold Steel - Does anyone really need an explanation as to why?
Buck - Just not really appealing to me right now.
SOG - Tacky.
Leatherman - Political reasons.
Strider - My friends are really in the military. For real.
Bark River - Just do nothing for me.
KaBar - Eh.
Mantis - Dark Ops - Et Al -- I dont even like shopping at the mall, I certainly am not working there.
Gerber - WOW has their quality slipped.
Wenger - I have always had Victorinox SAKs. No reason to switch.

Almar
Sog
Kershaw (I like their knives but cant seem to convince my self to buy another)
case
queen
buck (same reason or lack of reason as kershaw)

This is a good thread idea.

For me the top choice is not really a maker/manufacturer its a type of knife. I have a laguiole. The handle is too slender and for my hand, is an accident waiting to happen. It makes me nervous to cut apples with it. It looks good though.

Also, I have seen that many manufacturers mention steel types, heat treating, etc they use. Most are proud to talk about this.

Gerber seems to use some sort of mystery steel for the most part that they are keeping a secret. At least i did not see much on this topic. I could be worng. Because of this I would not buy a Gerber right now.

Forgive my ignorance but...

A few people mentioned Leatherman for political reasons. What does this refer to?

Also, some mentioned ethical issues. Can you tell us more? Labour standards? Unfair trade policy? Questionable materials sources? Breaking warranty/service contracts?

Please elaborate...

Kershaw just doesn't have any designs that I personally would buy. I tend to avoid liner locks, recurving blades, and spring assists. That excludes nearly their entire lineup. The remainder don't compete with other available pieces for my purposes.

That being said I love 'em anyway and recommend them to plenty of people. I just don't like them for myself, ya' know? :)

ipm,

I don't believe Cuts Like A Kris wants people to elaborate on such topics as the last two in this thread. Probably better subjects for other forums.

DancesWithKnives

DWK2,

Fair enough. :)

I can see how that could be touchy.

I will keep my eye out for information on the web.

Busse - had a battle Mistress BM-E wish I had never traded it. Came with a nice kydex sheath, and was priced reasonable
Now it seems like you have to be a member of a group to get one, they are expensive, don't come with sheaths, and their way of putting out one style at a time doesn't appeal to me.

Ken

True, you have to be a member of a group to get one- that group is known as the human race. . . but, I suppose a really clever dog could get one if he tried. :D

The new production protocol eliminates excessive wait times, which were creeping into Randall territory. Prices have gone up very little, certainly less than the rate of inflation. Can't help you with the sheath problem, I prefer custom sheaths.

You got a laugh out of me, Rat. Randall is re-defining "Randall territory" with every passing day (61-63 months now, depending on the model).
