• Happy Thanksgiving to all of you! I hope that you all have something to be grateful for this year and for many years to come
  • America has reached 250 years, and I am grateful to be here, in the best country in the world. Thank every one of you who helps make this country a better place, those who have gone before and risked it all, and those who've paid the ultimate price to make the United States what we are today.

Happy Birthday America! Let Freedom Ring for all time!

What Compass do you use?

Yup, anything sold as a Silva in the U.S. since 1996 is NOT made by the original Silva of Sweden. If you want the REAL original Ranger in the U.S. you'll need to buy the Brunton 15TDCL.

My preference is a clear plastic baseplate compass with adjustable declination. A sighting mirror is a very nice, but often very expensive, extra feature. Its also nice to have a compass with a UTM grid.

My favorite compasses are the Brunton 15TDCL, Brunton Eclipse 8099, Suunto M3 Leader, and the Brunton 9020G. Choosing just one I'd pick the 15TDCL. Picking one for under $25, I pick the Suunto M3 Leader, though the 9020G is more comfortable in my front pocket.

I've got a Brunton 9030 Trailbuster...more for finding out which direction is which, but I'd like to get one that is more suited for mapwork if needed. The Trailbuster has a rotating bezel, so mapwork is possible, but I'm not sure to what extent yet.
