What containers are you using?

Hi guys. I'm taking advantage of some down time and updating my PSK's. I currently have my best one made of my gear stashed in a 12 oz. tin cup with a piece of leather over the top for a lid. I like to keep the kit in a tin/metal container so it makes boiling water easier. I also like the handle on the cup so you can fasten the kit to things if you have to. The only real problem is the makeshift lid. It keeps the contents in but it's not very convenient. I know you can buy all kinds of tins online but I wanted some other ideas.

So what kinds of metal containers are you guys using for your kits? I'm looking for something a bit bigger than the altoids tin size. Thanks for any ideas.

A Pelican 1010 is a great option. It is water resistant/proof, floats, durable and can hold a small kit. Between $10-15 online. I also believe they have a lifetime warranty.

I saw someone on here recommend the cheap metal kitchen canisters and I have some so I tried them out. They work great and come in tons of sizes ( from just big enough to fit a softball into to as big as you want) plus they are cheap and easy to get hold of at most stores.

The only restriction is make sure you get one with a handle on the lid because if it don't have a handle on the lid you'll have fun getting that lid off after you boil water in it.

I would suggest a set of British Army-style mess tins.

They are very light and very cheap. There are various non-issue ones available too, including in stainless steel.

I have an old set of tinned iron ones myself, which I use occasionally. The large surface area of the base means they heat the contents quickly even on a tiny fire or an Esbit folding solid fuel stove. You can use the smaller one to heat water and place the larger one on top to warm up your food or use it separately as a frying pan or whatever. The two tins fit together to make a nice box for emergency rations or a survival kit!

Where other than bensbackwoods can i find the zebra pots? Ben has none in stock.

I have the 12cm Zebra billy. It is a great cooing pot for 1 person and ok for 2. You can boil a full 32oz of water in it. The 10cm seems a bit small to me.
If you are going to cook in it over a fire you need to remove the plastic lid locks. Once you do the lid wont lock on it anymore.

I got mine here. But they don't show them anymore.

You can find a lot of info on them at bushcraftuk as they are popular on that site.

Can they be put back on?

I just threw mine away because I bought it to cook in but if I remember correctly I would say yes they could be put back on but not easily. I think it would be fine if you plan on using it for storage and only cooking in it in an emergency. I don't think the clips would last if you plan on taking them off and on frequently. Also it is only locked when the bail was sticking straight up. A stuff sack or small bungee cord can be used to keep it closed. If it locking up tight is of great concern then I think you have better options. The MSR Stowaway pots DuchV linked or one of the following links. A bail could be made from small stainless cable.

My two favorite hard cases are a Pelican 1010 and 1020.

Favorite soft case is the Tactical Tailor E & E Pouch.

I'm considering the larger Maxpedition bottle holder as well. I can attach the Tactical Tailor Pouch onto that and do a bunch of other things in a modular way to suit different needs, etc.

You guys are a dangerous lot - I've just ordered a couple of the BCB Mini Mess boxes from the 'bay. These:

http://www.bcbsurvivalusa.com/xcart/catalog/BCB-Mini-Mess-Box-p-16156.html

Or search eBay for "NATO mess tin" like I did.

They're coming from the UK, so it'll be awhile before I can tell how they'll work out. Not meant for cooking, of course, but hopefully good for waterproof storage of other items. And a fair amount larger than an Altoids tin. A reasonable size to keep in a BOB or glovebox. Anybody else used these before?

I think those are made by Zebra as well, or at least Zebra makes a very similar product. I saw the Zebra stuff at a trade show a while back, and they market their products more as food containers, especially for bento/sushi lunches. They make some nice products and I was thinking about becoming a dealer.

I see that Sigg makes a similar box, but the sizes are getting larger than I really need (and the prices head upwards as well).

Haven't seen the Zebra models yet.

Both the .775 and .475 would be good for a pack. Seeings everybody is out of the Zebra product, with no insight as to when they might get more, I'm thinking about going with the MSR .475 pot. It'd be perfect for the daypack.
