Right now i use a grizzly and have th go ahead for a 2 hp variable speed kmg. We all know they are rock solid and good machines. My question is what did the kmg do for you ? did it make you more accurate , better grinds what did you notice when you upgraded? the grizzly is ok but it runs at the speed of light and i only profile and and cut the main bevels in. i can do any finish work with it all all due to the speed

Well I didn't get a KMG. I'll bet they weren't even an idea for someone to make when I got my 2X72 Bee . I t made all those good differences you mentioned and the whole grinding outlook seemed immediately more comfortable. Frank

I went from a Grizzly to a KMG 2hp variable speed. The first knife was a bit of a learning curve because you'll be changing small things like your height/angle for grinding just because you're on a new machine. Even with the first blade, though, I found I immediately had so much more control. The belt wasn't wandering away from my grind, I could slow it down to a crawl for finishing, and I had much more power. So I think you'll really enjoy the change, especially the variable speed. I still use my Grizzly for most of my handle work.

I got a kmg after about three months of knife making with a craftsman 2x42. I may have quit by now if I didnt have the kmg....

Frank, what that machine like, how is the flat platen on that one???

I love my KMG. Being able to change out from platen to wheels is great. Got one with a platen and small wheel attachment and then reworked 8 and 10" Grizzly wheels to take bearings. Bought some 1 1/2" square stock from the steel yard., polished it up a bit with a " grinder and made my own tool arms. The small wheel is great for those tight spots and things like finger grooves. A variable speed is fantastic. Being able to go from crazy fast to do rough work with a heavy grit to slow for fine work with lots of control is important. Not only is the control great, but, when you are working a hardened and tempered blade you don't heat it up as fast. Going slow is so important I am going to change the pulley on my motor so that my machine has more torge when running real slow. I got my 2hp 3ph TECF motor from Grizzly for a bit over $100 and remote mounted a TECO VFD in an enclosure, then wired a 10k 5 turn pot near the machine for speed control. About $1000 to Rob for the machine w platen, small wheel attachment and 2 small wheels and another $600 and some work to have everything I wanted in a grinder. I liked it so well, I cut my old 2 wheel 48" machine apart and reworked it into a KMG clone. Bought another Grizzly motor and run both off the same VFD.
