I bought this little hudson bay axe at the National Trappers Assoc convention in Marshfield WI last week.

It is stamped LL Bean Inc; Freeport Maine on the left poll. Stamped 1 under the poll

Dimensions:
14" handle
Head is ~3.5" long.
Blade is ~2.5"
Poll is 1" wide by 1.625" tall.
Head currently weighs ~13 oz, but it has seen considerable use. The blade was quite blunt when I purchased it. I reprofiled it and plan to put a pretty short handle on it. The eye is quite large. A 24" boy's axe handle from our local hardware store fits quite closely.

I suspect it was made by Snow & Nealley, but the size is odd. Does anyone have information on what this axe originally looked like?

Nice. Hubby has a 1 3/4 lb. hudson bay ax with just L. Bean stamped on it. Can't see but 1 L. It was his neighbor's, might be 40 some years old. Hubby went with a 28 inch handle, should have gone with a 24.

Here is the finished hatchet.

10" long and weighs 17.4 oz.

Here in comparison to a Vaughn sounding axe, 13" Wetterlings and 19" Wetterlings skinning axe.
